The Witch on the Holy Night anime movie is scheduled to begin screening on November 20. The date was revealed through an announcement trailer that also provides a slight voice preview, but is lacking in new footage.
Witch on the Holy Night (Mahotsukai no Yoru), announced back in 2021, is an adaptation of the visual novel by Type-Moon. Steam’s story description for the game’s 2023 HD remaster reads:
In the mansion on the hill, there lived two witches…
It is the late 1980s—the twilight of an era of beauty and vigor.
A boy moves to the city, barely missing two witches living in modern times.
The boy leads a completely ordinary life.
She carries herself with gallant pride.
The girl lives a sleepy, hidden life.
Each walks a starlit path.
One would never expect their paths to cross.
The story of how these three disparate people came together is soon to be told.
The cast of the ufotable production includes Haruka Tomatsu as Aoko Aozaki, Yusuke Kobayashi as Sojuro Shizuki, and Kana Hanazawa as Alice Kuonji. All three starred in the remaster.
The Witch on the Holy Night visual novel was first released for PC in Japan in 2012. The fully voiced, full HD version was released for Nintendo Switch and PS4 in December 2022 and came to Steam in December 2023.
The character of Aoko Aozaki first appeared in the 2000 visual novel Tsukihime (which takes place after Witch on the Holy Night and has received a remake of two of its routes) and has shown up in various otherType-Moon-related titles as well. Another character, Aoko’s sister, Touko Aozaki, is a major character in The Garden of Sinners light novel series, which has been adapted into a series of anime films also produced by ufotable.
