The Eat-Man manga by Akihito Yoshitomi is getting a new TV anime adaptation. A super teaser trailer and a teaser visual were revealed with the announcement.
The show is titled Eat-Man: The Over Order, and is directed by Shunji Oga (Hikawa Maru Monogatari, Amon Saga) at Studio Cab with character designs by Satoshi Hirayama (Asateer 2: Mirai no Mukashibanashi) and scriptwriting by Yoshitomi. Masashi Ebara is voicing main character Bolt Crank, a mercenary with a power enabling him to create something out of the myriad, normally inedible things that he can consume.
Originally published by MediaWorks, Eat-Man ran from 1996 to 2003. A new series titled Eat-Man: The Main Dish began in 2014 and received its sixth and final volume in 2019.
The first Eat-Man anime debuted in 1997. It was directed by Koichi Mashimo (Noir, Madlax, Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom), who also did the series composition, and produced by Studio Deen. It was followed by a 1998 anime directed by Toshifumi Kawase (Yakuza Fiancé: Raise wa Tanin Ga Ii, Recommendations from Iwamoto-senpai), also a Deen production.
Discotek sells the EAT-MAN the Complete Series Blu-ray, which has the following synopsis:
In Eat-Man, Bolt Crank is an “explorer”–a mercenary who only accepts jobs that fit his moral standards. Even so, explorers like him are rarely trusted, and employment–both in getting and also doing the job–is hazardous. However, despite the fact Bolt says it’s the only job he’s any good at, he’s also the best explorer around. Moreover, he has a unique ability. He’s able to eat anything at all, and later can reproduce it wholly intact and functional! As an enigmatic man of few words, it’s hard to understand someone who can do something so strange, whose only skill involves taking dangerous jobs for money, and who despite it all, just wants to be normal. In a mysterious world of advanced technology and weird science, it seems that some things never change. Watch Bolt’s adventures in this twelve episode series!
In Eat-Man 98, this retake of Eat-Man shifts the saga of Bolt Crank closer to that of the original story penned by Akihito Yoshitomi. In it, the world is one of contrasting extremes, of high technology but low lifestyles, all mixed with fairy tale-like super science. Bolt returns as the best explorer in the world, a mercenary who, while only accepting jobs he finds moral, always gets the job done… even if he sometimes takes them to ironic extremes in order to do the right thing! Possessed of his own strange power, Bolt can eat anything and then later recreate it, which he uses to help him solve the problems his explorer lifestyle often puts him up against. See the fable that was originally envisioned in these twelve episodes!
