Checked: Petit Planet – HoYoverse’s peaceful planet simulation

Between all the hustle and bustle, the huge exhibition stands and the action-packed innovations at gamescom 2026, one title in particular stands out: Petit Planet. What we think about it is below.

HoYoverse strikes a completely new tone with this cozy life simulation. Instead of fast-paced fights or complex combos, the game invites you to take a deep breath and create your own little home in space step by step. We had the opportunity to try out the sample version ourselves.

Getting started: Your own character without a lot of bells and whistles

Before the actual journey begins, the session starts with a detour into character creation. In addition to choosing a name, the basic visual characteristics of the character can be specified. Anyone who expects the powerful editor tools of a traditional role-playing game will find that the options are rather compact. However, that doesn’t take away from the title: for a relaxed life simulation, the selection on offer is completely sufficient to create a likeable character for your own planet.

From a lonely celestial body to a busy home

As a so-called Planet Tender, you take on the role of a helping hand that is supposed to breathe new life into an initially barren celestial body. You are by no means alone: in the first few minutes you meet the first residents who act as guides through the initial phase. The tutorial does not present itself as a rigid guide, but rather feels like a relaxed walk through the new environment. The first playful steps are as follows:

  • Working through quests: A series of beginner missions that build on each other organically introduce you to the game mechanics. Collect resources: Wood, stones and natural materials are found and mined in the area.
  • Tools & crafting: The first tools are made using collected materials. Then the carpentry, nailing and assembly takes place – from simple furniture to decorative objects.
  • Pursue everyday activities: Classic cozy game elements such as planting, harvesting, cooking and fishing fit seamlessly into the process.

Neighbors with personality & adventure in Starsea

As the game progresses, the appearance of your own planet changes noticeably. In addition to new buildings and decorations, more characters are gradually moving in. These so-called neighbors don’t just serve as a backdrop: through conversations, favors and joint activities, you unlock new stories and get to know the personalities of the residents better. If you are looking for a change from your own floe, travel out to the so-called Starsea. This expanded area is home to neighboring islands and different landscapes that invite exploration and discovery.

Conclusion & outlook

Petit Planet deliberately focuses on decelerated gameplay. The game does not impose any time pressure and does not overwhelm you with complex requirements. We really liked the basic idea behind the game: the approach of creating your own, very decelerated empire in space is a real success. A personal highlight of our session was definitely the fishing – it really put us in a good mood and fits perfectly into the relaxed flow of the game.
It remains unclear for now whether the long-term motivation will extend beyond the first few hours of play and how much depth the finished product will offer. However, the first impression at gamescom conveys a very harmonious overall picture for fans of relaxed construction and life simulations.

The game is expected to launch in winter 2026 for PC, iOS and Android.
