“Ida Lupino: Gentlemen and Miss Lupino | TAKE ONE Watch Online” For a filmmaker as prolific and well-regarded as actress-turned-director Ida Lupino, her legacy does not loom as large as many of her (male) contemporaries, even considering that she worked outside the studio system in the era when the big players overwhelmingly dominated. While Lupino…
“The Electrical Life of Louis Wain | TAKE ONE Watch Online” The subjects of most of Louis Wain’s work were cats, and given the modern obsession with all things feline, it might be easy to be cynical about biopic THE ELECTRICAL LIFE OF LOUIS WAIN. However, although the film initially threatens to be a twee…
“Atabai | TAKE ONE | Cambridge Film Festival 2021 Watch Online” In ATABAI, Niki Karimi elicits a performance of deep sorrow and humanity from Hadi Hejazifar. Amongst some beautiful imagery of northwest Iran – which evokes Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s eye for the landscapes of neighbouring Turkey – the lingering trauma of the characters’ pasts and…
“France | TAKE ONE | Reviews Watch Online” Journalist France de Meurs is being pulled in every direction. With captivating central performances from two talented young actors and a crisp…
“The Souvenir: Part II | TAKE ONE Watch Online” THE SOUVENIR: PART II continues Joanna Hogg’s semi-autobiographical journey of a young woman at film school in England. This new entry develops on the first film’s themes to capture the essence of both artistic escape and being young in an England of repressed emotions. This second…
“Passing | TAKE ONE | 59th New York Film Festival Watch Online” Rebecca Hall’s debut feature, PASSING, is a sumptuous-looking tale with a layered story anchored by subtle performances from Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga. However, that sumptuousness frequently tips toward a visual and auditory fussiness that distracts from the flow between and within scenes…
“Bantú Mama | TAKE ONE Watch Online” BANTÚ MAMA is a film that never entirely gives its audience the complete picture painted in the mind of its characters. However, by allowing relationships to develop without over-laden dialogue and instead relying on the team’s visual craft and acting skills to sketch out this story, the film…
