The Mandalorian Shows What The Future Of Star Wars Should Look Like

The Mandalorian shows what the future of Star Wars should look like. The Mandalorian has quickly become some of the best Star Wars content to come from the Disney era. The series can serve as a potential blueprint of how the Lucasfilm can tackle future stories about the galaxy far, far away.

In many ways, The Mandalorian is what Star Wars should have looked like from the beginning. With an emphasis on building original characters and lore, The Mandalorian expanded on the Star Wars franchise without falling into the pitfalls of nostalgia and kept fan service to a minimum throughout its debut season.

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker completing the Skywalker saga, the future of Star Wars can exist outside of it. While there is always some room to explore moments in the saga that could bring interesting stories, the main focus should primarily be to expand the Star Wars universe and not fill in holes in the original nine films.

The Skywalker saga is officially over – again. With Disney closing the books on the nine-film series, the future of Star Wars movies is unclear. While it’s possible that Star Wars will eventually return to the Skywalker family in some form or fashion, for now, the book is closed. There have been a ton of rumors over the last few years of what Star Wars movies could look like after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Rian Johnson was reported to have been tasked with spearheading an entire Star Wars trilogy. There has been very little news on that front, and with his Knives Out story starting to expand, his future in the Star Wars franchise seems to still be very much up in the air. Likewise, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the minds behind Game of Thrones, were also hired to create their own Star Wars series. The pair eventually left the project, opting for a wider deal with Netflix.

While Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, has promised there will be more Star Wars movies on the way, there has not been much public information given to see a clear plan for the studio. With their latest Star Wars trilogy met with divisiveness – specifically, from fans with Star Wars: The Last Jedi and critics with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – Disney seems to feel a short break is needed. While it seems like there is a Kevin Feige Star Wars project in the works, the franchise’s future direction is unclear. The same can not be said for its future on streaming, primarily on Disney+.

The Mandalorian was one of the primary selling points for Disney when launching its streaming service. The show was headlined by the strong talent behind the camera, with names like Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa, Deborah Chow, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Taika Waititi all taking part in the development of the series. The Mandalorian also had a strong lead with Pedro Pascal as Mando (Din Djarin) and The Child, nicknamed as Baby Yoda, winning the hearts of virtually everyone.

The Mandalorian was full of references and homages to Star Wars, from iconic planets to hints of classic characters and the Force. The difference from this series and the movies, however, is the way homages are used. In The Mandalorian, these Easter eggs and references feel organic to the story. Each moment felt ingrained into a larger tapestry of plot and nothing felt out of place or too on the nose. At times, Star Wars can be focused too much on fan service, with Easter eggs appearing on-screen for the sake of an applause. The Mandalorian brings a fresh vision to the table and that is why it feels like the best content Star Wars has put out in years.

While the series is just getting started and season 2 is on the way, there is a sense of optimism and confidence that audiences have in the showrunners and writers of the series to deliver a product that is satisfying to the fans, which will bring in new viewers and contribute something fresh to the franchise. Simply put, The Mandalorian avoids the glaring mistakes of the Star Wars movies.

The Mandalorian is a potential blueprint for how Star Wars can be going forward. That does not mean every series needs to focus on Mandalorians or throw Baby Yoda into everything. It means the blueprint that the series used to succeed and stand apart can be used on all future projects. Whether it is on television or the big screen, the goal should always be to build and expand on the Star Wars lore and not rehash it.

It is worth noting that The Mandalorian is distinctly more diverse on both ends of the camera. With a person of color leading the series in Pedro Pascal and a host of diverse directors and showrunners, the series has fresh voices lending their talents to Star Wars. One of the gems found in the series is Deborah Chow, who directed the best episodes of the first season and has been tapped to lead the Obi-Wan series on Disney+ as well. The second was Rick Famuyiwa, showcasing his talents in the world of Star Wars with strong episodes. Having diverse filmmakers and creators tackle Star Wars allows it to be fresh, exciting, and new. It also helps to have veterans like Dave Filoni serve as a loremaster to tap into areas of Star Wars far beyond that of the Skywalker saga.

The Mandalorian is proof that Star Wars can succeed and thrive if it allows itself to be fresh. There is incredible potential in Star Wars that can produce a lifetime of films, television shows, and books if it continues to leave the franchise in the hands of new and diverse people. The Mandalorian was a great show because it tackled new cultures, worlds, traditions, and aspects of the Force that the feature films did not. There is even room in Star Wars to combine both, with the Obi-Wan series taking place in the middle of the Skywalker saga but exploring a new area of it. While the future of Star Wars movies remains unclear, The Mandalorian shows there is still a lot of life left in the brand
