Buffy the Vampire Slayer: How Darla, Angel, Spike and Drusilla Were Sired

In the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe, one is not born a vampire. They are sired– that is, transformed into a vampire by being bitten by one. In season 2, Wesley Wyndham-Pryce explained that after being bitten, the victims would „reawaken on the night after the siring.“ But that rebirth changes former human’s personalities, turning them violent and creating a thirst for other victims. Each of the main vampires on the show were completely different pre-siring from their distinct and often destructive personalities.

Spike, who is known as the rebellious bad boy with a strong disdain towards humans, was previously a soft-hearted yet untalented poet, who desperately wanted to fall in love. And Angel went through one of the biggest transformations after being sired, going from sweetheart Liam to evil Angelus, eventually turning into the gentle vampire whom Buffy and Cordelia fell in love with.

It’s difficult to imagine them as their non-human personas, so here’s a look back at how and when Angel, Drusilla, Spike, and Darla were sired and transformed into the beloved Buffy the Vampire Slayer characters.

Darla was the first to be sired. Her backstory was shown in season 2 of Angel. Darla, who at the time was a prostitute, was lying on her deathbed with syphilis when she was visited by a mysterious hooded figure, who turned out to be the Master posing as a priest. When she’s left alone with him, the Master revealed himself, telling her that she’ll be reborn and he’ll be her savior.

In the first part of the season 2 finale, it’s revealed that in 1753 in Galway, Ireland, Angel (then known as Liam) was sired by Darla. Angel became enthralled by her beauty when he first set eyes on the vampire, and foolishly decided to follow her. „So I asked myself, what’s a lady of your station doing alone in an alley with the reputation that this one has?“ questioned Angel. He offered himself as an escort to protect her from harm, unaware that she would be the one to harm him. After flirting with him, Darla asked him to close his eyes. But instead of the expected kiss, she dug her fangs into his neck, turning him into the fearful (former) villain Angelus.

In the season 2 episode „Lie to Me,“ it’s explained that when Angel was the evil Angelus in 1860, he became obsessed with Drusilla, after Darla introduced her as the perfect new victim. Before turning her into a vampire, Angel killed everybody she loved, and mentally tortured her. She fled to a convent, but on the day that she became a nun, Angel turned her into a demon.
