“#9 One Chicago Couples That Are the Most Likely to Survive Next Season”

After all, across Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago P.D., there have been successes (like Eamonn Walker’s Battalion Chief Wallace Boden and his wife, Melissa Ponzio’s Donna) and failures (like Jesse Spencer’s firefighter Matt Casey and his ex-wife, Monica Raymund’s firefighter and paramedic Gabby Dawson) in the romance department. But going into the 2020-2021 season, we’re actually feeling quite hopeful about some couples that aren’t even together at the moment.

Boden and Donna (Chicago Fire)
Boden and Donna met on a call, and while they’ve had their arguments, there’s been no need to worry about their future — and nothing suggests that will be any different in Season 9.

Cruz and Chloe (Chicago Fire)
Firefighter Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) just married Chloe (Kristen Gutoskie) near the end of Season 8, and it’s likely they’ll remain one of the relationships in the background — especially since Gutoskie is recurring, not a series regular — going forward. While they’ve tackled the risks of his job (before the engagement), that could always come up again, but we’re going to be optimistic about their future.

Severide and Kidd (Chicago Fire)
Firefighters Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) already fought through obstacles and jealousy before settling into the committed relationship they’re in now. Really, the only question for next season is whether or not there might be an engagement in their future.

Mouch and Platt (Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.)
Firefighter Randy “Mouch” McHolland (Christian Stolte) and Desk Sergeant Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) are as stable as it gets and the most crossover romance in One Chicago, past, present, and future. It’s as simple as that.

Halstead and Upton (Chicago P.D.)
So far, the detectives are only partners on the job, but Season 8 is going to see that change. According to showrunner Rick Eid, the relationship between Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) “is simmering” and we’ll likely see “these two open up about their true feelings for one another.” It’s only a question of what they do about that, so perhaps by the end of the season, we see them take that step.

Burgess and Ruzek (Chicago P.D.)
Season 7 was utterly heartbreaking for the officers (and exes), who learned they were having a baby only for Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) to lose it after getting injured on the job. “There’s also a chance they might reunite romantically at some point in the future,” Eid said, but added “whether that would happen in Season 8 or not is still unclear.” We’re going to speculate that it’ll happen by the finale.

April and Ethan (Chicago Med)
Nurse April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) and Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) were engaged, until the truth about a kiss she shared with Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) came out. But they were on their way back to one another in the early Season 5 finale. Chances are we’ll see them reunited at some point next year — if they aren’t already when the premiere picks up — and we think this time, it will stick.

Will and Natalie (Chicago Med)
Both doctors may be involved (or potentially involved) with other members of the hospital staff, but something tells us that Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) and Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) won’t be able to stay away from each other for good. Even if the exact label is up in the air by the Season 6 finale, it’s likely we’ll see them together in some capacity.

Maggie and Ben (Chicago Med)
One of the most solid couples in the One Chicago world, our only concern for the charge nurse (Marlyne Barrett) and her husband (Charles Malik Whitfield), whom she met in chemotherapy, is their health. Relationship-wise, they’re good. Family-wise — they’re fostering — they’re good. That’s unlikely to change.
