Deaf Crocodile and Cartuna have jointly announced the North American license acquisition of the Tamala 2030: A Punk Cat in Dark anime film, which serves as the sequel to the 2002 film Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space. The “psychedelic cyber-noir” anime film will be released theatrically by the two companies sometime in 2026.

The sequel film will have its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada, which takes place from July 16, 2025 to August 3, 2025.

A trailer for Tamala 2030: A Punk Cat in Dark was also released and is available with English subtitles (which can be accessed by clicking the “CC” caption button on YouTube).

The new license announcement marks the first co-acquisition between Brooklyn-based animation production company Cartuna and distributor Deaf Crocodile.

Tamala 2030: A Punk Cat in Dark is directed by creative duo t.o.L (consisting of K. and kuno), who directed and wrote the screenplay for Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space, which first premiered in Japan on October 19, 2002. They, along with Kentaro Nemoto, also worked on the character designs and Tamala 2010, with Nemoto handling the film’s 2D animation.

Deaf Crocodile released Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space on home video last October. The film will also be featured on the Criterion Channel this coming August.

An OVA titled Tamala on Parade was released in Japan in August 2007, as well as the short animated project Tamala’s Wild Party in the same year.

Deaf Crocodile describes the main synopsis of Tamala 2030: A Punk Cat in Dark as:

Carefree, coquettish, and capricious, Tamala is the cutest girl-cat in dystopian Cat Tokyo, year 2030—or at any other point in the time/space continuum. She has randomly invited herself along on her detective friend Michelangelo’s missing-person investigation. It seems the case is one of seven sudden vanishings in an astronomical pattern across Cat Japan that occurred at the exact same moment one night. Their search leads ever deeper into a mystery with ancient, occult roots and apocalyptic implications—and threads leading to Tamala herself. Shadowed by a covert agent of the Catty & Co. consortium, she may in fact be the greatest enigma. Indolent ingénue? Megacorporate mascot? Mythic messiah, or manifestation of cosmic malevolence? Anyhow, wow—she sure is a great dancer!
