We were able to try out Sea of Remnants for ourselves at gamescom 2026. We had around 30 minutes to get a first impression of the upcoming ocean fantasy RPG from Joker Studio and NetEase Games.
Our play session took us to an island where, among other things, we had to compete against a mermaid. Then we went back to the ship and out to sea. Even though there wasn’t enough time to get to know all of the game’s systems, we were already able to get a good impression of what Sea of Remnants has to offer.
An unusual look
Right from the start we noticed the special graphic style: the world and the characters have an eye-catching, colorful doll look. Because the game consciously relies on its own style instead of relying on realistic visuals, it stands out clearly from other fantasy RPGs and remains in the memory.
Turn-based tactics on land
After exploring the island, our first major battle followed – a turn-based battle against a boss opponent. For us personally, this mechanic is a big plus point: instead of reacting hectically, you can plan actions calmly. The various abilities already worked well in the demo and left you wanting more, even if the final tactical depth cannot yet be conclusively assessed after a single fight.
Out to sea by ship
Then we went back to the ship. The game world consists of a large archipelago where, in addition to land exploration, sea battles are also on the agenda. The combination of island excursions, battles and sea travel promises a lot of variety. However, how deep the battles on the water will be in the long term remains to be seen in the finished game.
Story and roguelike elements
The plot revolves around a sailor who has lost his memories and travels the world. Important pillars are your own crew and roguelike elements, which are intended to create different challenges for each journey.
Our conclusion
Our first impression is positive. The doll look gives the title a strong character and the turn-based combat system is convincing. Although there are still unanswered questions regarding long-term motivation and the island’s diversity, the mix definitely makes you curious. It’s worth a look for fans of turn-based RPGs.
Sea of Remnants will be released as a free-to-play title for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S as well as iOS and Android. The release is planned for 2027, and a global closed beta test is scheduled to start in December 2026.
