Today, after a long wait, “Super Mario Bros. Wonder” was finally released for the Nintendo Switch. To celebrate the release, we’re looking back at the past “New Super Mario Bros.” games…
New Super Mario Bros.

After many 3D adventures, the return to the franchise’s roots marked the beginning of a new era: “New Super Mario Bros.” was released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS. This game saw the return of popular power-ups like the Super Mushroom and the Fire Flower, but Mario also met iconic enemies like Bowser again. This time Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach and Mario has to fight his way through a total of eight worlds to save the princess. There are now also many new power-ups and no opponent is an obstacle for Mario anymore: With the mega mushroom he destroys everything that gets in his way and with the turtle shell he can reach the goal faster than any Koopa. The mini mushroom makes Mario small and an easy target for opponents, but he practically floats in the air, runs over water or simply runs up the walls!
Thanks to the Nintendo DS, you could take a break at any time during the game by simply closing the DS. This meant you could continue playing at any time, even when you were on the go. If you didn’t have enough after the story, you could simply fight with a friend. Several mini-games and also a 1 vs. 1 mode ensured many more hours of play with the Italian plumber.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Just three years later, the first “New Super Mario Bros.” game was released for a Nintendo home console: the Nintendo Wii. While Mario and the Toads were celebrating Princess Peach’s birthday in the Mushroom Palace, Bowser’s minions suddenly emerged from the birthday cake and kidnapped Princess Peach again. This time Mario could slide across the ice with the penguin suit or swim precisely in the underwater levels. With the propeller mushroom he flew through the levels and with the extra boost you could save yourself if a jump led into the abyss.
One of the most notable additions to this game was the multiplayer mode with Luigi and the Toads, which allowed up to four players to jump through levels at the same time. This feature brought families and friends together and provided countless hours of chaotic but fun competition: By shaking the Wii Remote, you could pick up your opponents and reach unreachable heights, or even throw yourself down.
New Super Mario Bros. 2

After the Nintendo 3DS was released in 2011, you could experience the depth effect at any time, even without 3D glasses, which made the games even more realistic. This is exactly what you could do in “New Super Mario Bros. 2”, which was released in 2012. Here too, Princess Peach was kidnapped again and Mario had to save her again. You could also use the gold flower to turn all blocks into coins and even the strongest opponents had no chance against Mario’s golden power. The Tanuki known from “Super Mario Bros. 3” also returned in this game.
New Super Mario Bros. U

The first Super Mario adventure in HD was also released in 2012 and was released again for a home console, the Wii U. As is usual in the games in the “New Super Mario Bros.” series, Mario travels through different worlds to find Princess To save Peach from Bowser’s clutches. Instead of using the tanuki, this time Mario flew through the levels with the super acorn. But the penguin suit and the propeller mushroom from the Wii part also returned here. The game was also released with some new characters under the title “New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe” on the Nintendo Switch in early 2019.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Today “Super Mario Bros. Wonder” is released for the Nintendo Switch. But this time a new “Super Mario Bros.” game is being released without the addition of “New”? But “Super Mario Bros. Wonder” reinvents the origins of the series and differs from the classic jump ‘n’ runs from previous years with many new features. But what exactly is new?

This time Princess Peach won’t be kidnapped. Mario and his friends visit Prince Florian together in the Flower Kingdom. Just as they are looking at a miracle flower, Bowser pounces on them and merges with the miracle flower and Prince Florian’s castle to form a dangerous opponent – he is up to mischief as a flying fortress! Mario and Co. now have to get through many new levels in order to defeat Bowser. But in every level a miracle flower appears that will turn the whole level upside down. Elements of the level can change, or even Mario can transform into a completely new form. Every miracle flower has a new, surprising effect and you never know what will happen. You can take a look at a few examples here:

But of course the power-ups are also there again. Of course you can’t do without the classic super mushroom and the fire flower, but completely new surprises await you: The elephant fruit turns you into an elephant that can destroy opponents and obstacles with its trunk. The bubble flower turns your opponents into soap bubbles that you can even jump on to overcome obstacles. With the drill mushroom you can drill underground, destroy crystals or even bury yourself in the ceiling! You also have a clear advantage when dealing with spiky opponents.

Badges support you in the individual levels and can be exchanged at will in each level. With the invisibility badge you can become invisible to all opponents – but also to yourself. With the pull-up jump you can simply make another jump on a wall or fly through the air with the parachute cap. There are many badges to discover and collect that will enhance your abilities.

In multiplayer you can now discover the levels together with up to three other players. But this time there are no more collisions with your players so you can fully concentrate on the levels. Or you can create an online room and invite up to twelve friends! You can play the levels as usual or have a race in any level!

You can now experience all of this and much more in “Super Mario Bros. Wonder”, which is now available for the Nintendo Switch.
