A teaser trailer for the SHAFT-produced Just Like Mona Lisa (Seibetsu “Mona Lisa” no Kimi e.) TV anime adaptation has dropped, along with some main staff and cast details.
Chika Anzai (Chitose Is in the Ramune Bottle‘s Asuka Nishino, Lycoris Recoil‘s Chisato Nishikigi) is voicing Hinase Arima, the protagonist of the story who, unusually for the setting’s denizens, has yet to choose their gender despite passing the typical age of doing so. Directing the anime is Apocalypse Hotel‘s Kana Shundo (also Luminous Witches and Princess Connect Re:Dive‘s assistant director).
The other revealed staff members are Nobuhiro Sugiyama (March Comes in Like A Lion) as character designer and Yuki Hayashi (My Hero Academia) as music composer. Sugiyama also has the chief animation director credit.
The Gender of Mona Lisa is based on a manga by Tsumuji Yoshimura. The anime’s synopsis reads:
Hinase, the main character who continues to live genderless. Childhood friends Ritsu and Shiori, who have already chosen theirs. What is “love”? What does it mean to have something you want to cherish above all else? Their classmates and the adults around them struggle and hesitate alongside them, weaving the story together. What choice will Hinase make?
The source material is serialized on Square Enix’s GANGAN Online and released its 10th and final volume in 2022. Manga Up! has it in English under the title The Gender of Mona Lisa.
