Kenshi Yonezu‘s “KICK BACK,” the opening theme for the Chainsaw Man TV anime, has become the first Japanese-language song to receive a Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The Platinum certification is given to songs that have sold at least one million units. “KICK BACK” received the Gold certification (at least 500,000 units sold) in 2023.
The song was originally released in October 2022. It performed well on multiple charts, reaching number one on Billboard Japan’s Hot Animation and Hot 100 charts, and entering the top 20 of the UK’s Official Rock & Metal Singles Chart and the top 30 of Billboard’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. It also entered Spotify’s Global Top 50, said to be a first for a Japanese artist.
“KICK BACK” recently received a remix from American duo Frost Children.
