“There is no evidence at this point that it’s an external act,” Carranza said during Mayor Bill de Blasio’s daily press briefing. “It’s more of somebody internally within that school that decided to not play by the rules.”
The sixth-grade class at IS 259 in Dyker Heights was having its first online sessions of the academic year on Wednesday when the virtual lesson was taken over.
“5 minutes into my daughter’s Google meet with her first class, and several ‘students’ have hijacked the meeting, the first posting Trump pics, and then someone streamed PORN!!,” tweeted Devon Morales, the horrified mom of one student.
“No teachers should be hosting online classes without remote conference managers or IT monitoring them. Intro to b—job’s should NOT have been part of my daughter’s 6th grade curriculum,” she continued. “Do better!”
The DOE is investigating the incident, and Carranza said more information may be available later Thursday.
The agency did not immediately reveal how they identified the culprit as an insider.
But both Carranza and de Blasio touted the DOE’s online security protocols with remote classes part of the new normal amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“We built in the kind of security that is very, very much what we feel is state-of-the-art to prevent an external hack,” said Carranza. “At this point we feel very secure about the external threat being mitigated.”
“Teachers also have guidelines and principals have protocols that they put in place as well when you have mischievous students that decide not to follow the rules,” he added.
Hizzoner — who said that he learned of the incident for the first time from a reporter’s question Thursday morning — said, “I’m sure every parent would be troubled by that and I’m very sorry that happened
“I know there’s very powerful protections in place, and I don’t know how something like that could happen to an individual student and that obviously worries me and we have to address that.”
The incident was one of several gripes parents had with Wednesday’s return of remote-learning, with other complaints including problems logging in and uncommunicative teachers.
De Blasio on Thursday delayed the return of some students to in-person learning — again.
