It sounds like a nightmare for fans: After over 23 years German version of «One Piece» All of the long-established German names of the characters are suddenly to be exchanged for the original Japanese names – a step that many long-time fans find to be an unforgivable interference with their nostalgic experience and their memories.
But how come? Netflix has announced that it will release the old episodes of “One Piece” on its streaming platform from November 15th. But this is not the old RTL2 version that fans love, but rather a completely new dubbed version. And no stone is left unturned: all Germanized names disappear completely from the dubbed version! In the future it should be “Luffy” instead of “Luffy”, “Ussopp” instead of “Ussopp” or “Roronoa Zoro” instead of “Roronoa Zoro”. The only positive thing about the new dubbing: The old dubbing actors should be there this time too. This means that the fans don’t have to do without the established speakers around Daniel Hülse & Co.
Why this profound change? Quite simply: The Japanese licensor TOEI ANIMATION wants it that way. As part of an international “harmonization” of names. However, you don’t have to understand why beloved names simply have to be “broken” after almost a quarter of a century.
Netflix will release the first 16 episodes of the “East Blue” saga from November 16, 2025.
