Snail Mail’s “Dead End” and the best new songs right now

The first thing you’ll notice about Snail Mail’s first song in nearly four years is that the cracks, grit, and gravel in her voice have gone; before she released 2022’s Valentine, the indie rock singer underwent a vocal cord surgery whose effects are only now being heard: smoothing her voice out into fluttering lengths of silk chiffon. All the other hallmarks of her still fantastic songwriting and addictive melodic turns are still there though. —Steffanee Wang

Tove Styrke is my Roman Empire of Swedish pop. Her 2018 EP Sway went platinum in my household, and then she kinda went away for a few years. “Prayer” is her first release since 2022 and what a hard pivot and brilliant return: Styrke may have swapped bubblegum pop for lush techno, but her playful approach to melody and sound remains. —SW

K-pop star KiiiKiii doubles down on her “weird” reputation on “Delulu”. The track is littered with niche cultural references such as Japanese artist Towa Tei, South Korean electropop band Clazziquai, even name checking Arab Drift Core. But beyond the liner notes intrigue, its hypnotic blend of house and electronica makes the track the perfect soundtrack to your daydreams. – Hajin Yoo

Berlin-based, Danish artist Courtesy teamed up with our favorite Danish alt-popstar, Erika de Casier, on this slinky and spry cover of Olive’s ’90s club classic, “You’re Not Alone.” This jungle-inflected “dance review” is as tastefully composed as it is infectiously danceable. — Tobias Hess

New York City experimental rock quartet (and Gen F alumni) YHWH Nailgun added a new spiky texture to “Violet” off of Irish musician Maria Somerville’s ethereal 2025 album Luster. The remix is unnerving, raw and bristles with a quiet anxiety. — TH

This single by Los Angeles-based, Las Vegas-raised singer-songwriter Arima Ederra’s is deceptively simple. It has the component parts of a Motown classic — muffled rhythm guitar, a warm, welcoming bass line, and, of course, Ederra’s spry, expressive voice. All of it comes at you from a slight remove though, as if it’s beaming in from another realm. — TH

Lightris and sero sound deliriously carefree on this ode to reluctant grinding. They’re clearly downstream of fellow Milwaukeeans AyooLii and Certified Trapper, but “Kwik Trip” is sillier and bubblier than their Wisconsin low-end peers. TikTok fans came for Lightris’s head-over-heels viral chorus, but it’s sero’s quick-footed raps that elevate the track. — Vivian Medithi

Something special happens when Smino finds a producer who’s unphased by his shifty flow (think Sango or Monte Booker). On their second link-up, producer Umair delivers a beat that allows Simo to show off his versatility, and he brings along Calm, a Pakistani rapper who can somehow keep pace with Smino. — Kylah Williams

DC The Don takes Ear’s 2025 single “Real Life” (a FADER Song Of The Year) and flips the electronic bop into a piece of head-banging nostalgia. It’s full of rage, but sung with a sweet melody that feels strangely familiar. It probably hits peak enjoyment at a college party — LEDs flashing while you’re feeling lowkey like a moshing #sadboy. — KW
