Anime about anime? Yes there is! Today we introduce you to two such titles …

“How is it actually in an animation studio?” – Most anime fans should have asked this before. With a little luck you might catch a disc with making-of clips as bonus material. Such extras are rarely sown in German anime publications. In addition, it is often a short look over the shoulder of the animators or the people involved in compositing. The real everyday life in an animation studio can usually only be guessed at here.

With this curiosity, what could be more natural than an anime that deals with its own creation process? Many anime directors have apparently already had this idea. Because we want you in this special two titles imagine in which the Work in an animation studio (with a pinch of humor) something is illuminated in more detail.

We start with an anime that, due to its advanced age, should be known only to a few German fans: «Animation Runner Kuromi». More precisely, this is two OVAs from the years 2001 and 2004. These were made in the studio Yumeta Company Produced under the direction of Akitaro Daichi.

It’s all about this:

The OVAs are about the young Mikiko Oguro, who has just recently come from the animation academy. Because of her favorite anime “Luis Monde III.” she pursues the dream of producing such series herself one day. On your first day of work in the small Small Studio However, a nasty surprise awaits them: the healthily ailing production manager leaves the newcomer responsible for the production of a complete anime episode!

If this weren’t enough for the protagonist with the new nickname “Kuromi”, the schedule is still a long way behind. Now she must somehow manage to encourage the eccentric animators to finish the episode on time …

How realistic are the OVAs?

The first OVA is primarily one comedyin which much is in the service of humor exaggerated is shown. Explanations of the processes shown are used rather sparingly in the OVAs. A basic understanding of animation in advance can be helpful here. “Animation Runner Kuromi” also focuses almost exclusively on the processes in the actual animation studio. Work steps such as compositing and synchronization are not shown here.

Nonetheless, the producers also incorporated their own experience in the anime industry into the title. The second OVA in particular strikes a more serious note. This is mainly about that Compromise between quality and meeting the deadline. Among other things, the fictional antagonist holds Rei Takashimadaira Entrance whose character was inspired by real people.

Overall, “Animation Runner Kuromi” is more of a parody, which has been enriched with experiences from real anime production. The fact that this was not necessarily more detailed is probably due to the rather short term.

Where can I see the OVAs?

The second anime that we want to introduce to you today is «Shirobako». Although this is a good bit better known as “Animation Runner Kuromi”, it still has a kind of shadowy existence in Germany – wrongly! The 24-part series was produced in the studio P.A.Works in the year 2014. Tsutomu Mizushima directed it. 2020 a sequel film followed under the same team.

It’s all about this:

The series is about five friends and their love for anime. Aoi, Midori, Shizuka, Misa and Ema already work as members of an animation club in high school. There they produce their first short anime themselves – with a lot of dedication and diligence – and vow to make this hobby their profession in the future.

Two years later, two of the friends actually made it and are finally in the anime industry. It quickly turns out that the truth in the animation business looks a lot more stressful than it was in the dream. For Aoi and Ema, one challenge follows another at work, which they have to master under great time pressure. The other friends have a rocky road ahead of them to get into the anime business, which raises questions about the future, especially for Misa and Shizuka.

Will all five be able to meet again to fulfill the desire for their own professional anime?

How realistic is the series?

During «Animation Runner Kuromi» mainly drawing the so-called Keyframes showed, «Shirobako» covers one much wider range of activities in anime production. On the Licensing process, creating the Character Designs and Storyboards, the Animations, the backgrounds, the Compositing and the Synchronization everything is included. Even less well-known activities, like that of the noisemaker, are touched upon here.

Of course, the anime’s plot becomes spotty spiced up with a little dramaturgy. Nevertheless, real hurdles in anime production are also used for this. Overall, «Shirobako» offers a thoroughly authentic look behind the scenes of an animation studio. So maybe every detail may not correspond to reality, but you get a very entertaining presentation of the steps behind the creation of an anime.

By the way: Many of the characters in “Shirobako” are based on real people who work in anime production. For example, the character Seiji Kinoshita is based on the real anime director Seiji Mizushima. After seeing a few interviews with him, the impression arises that he was the godfather not only visually, but also for the personality of his anime doppelganger. Here you can see comparison pictures between other figures from the series and their real counterparts:
