Star Wars: Visions is set to take us back to an animated galaxy far, far away on October 29 with its third season. Ahead of its return, Disney has released both a poster for the anthology series and trippy previews of the Shinya Ohira-directed-and-written “BLACK” short.
The main poster for Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 shows off faces new and old, including an adorable teddy bear-like alien and a masked bounty hunter. Meanwhile, the “BLACK” stills tease the short’s visual sensibilities and psychological theme, with one featuring giant eyes manifesting within a mechanical interior to gaze at the stormtroopers within.

StarWars.com also shared some comments from Ohira (known for his expressionistic style of animation, and whose past directorial works Genius Party Beyond “Wanwa” and Asura’s Wrath Episode 11.5 “Forging Ahead”), which were presented at Anime NYC via a pre-recorded video. “We wanted to offer a film that was mainly based on Sakura Fujiawara’s singing voice set against these visuals of intense battles. That was our vision as we made the film,” Ohira said. “As for the interpretation of the story, the viewers, the people watching it, we kind of wanted to leave it up to them…so that’s how we made it.”
Ohira was also reported as saying, “We really got down into some fine details for this film. There’s the Death Star…. The setting is really super detailed, and the stormtroopers, drawing out the action in the battle scenes, it was really quite an arduous task for the animators. So that was painful, but it was worth it, and the end result really speaks for itself…. It’s really kind of something nobody’s ever seen before.”
Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 will feature the following shorts:
• “The Duel: Payback” (directed by Takanobu Mizuno at Kamikaze Douga) — sequel to “The Duel”
• “The Lost Ones”(directed by Hitoshi Haga at Kinema Citrus) — sequel to “The Village Bride”
• “The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope”(directed by Naoyoshi Shiotani at Production I.G) — sequel to “The Ninth Jedi”
• “Yuko’s Treasure” (directed by Masaki Tachibana at Kinema Citrus)
• “The Smuggler” (directed by Masahiko Otsuka at TRIGGER)
• “The Bounty Hunters” (directed by Junichi Yamamoto at WIT STUDIO)
• “The Song of Four Wings” (directed by Hiroyasu Kobayashi at Project Studio Q)
• “The Bird of Paradise” (directed by Tadahiro Yoshihira at Polygon Pictures)
• “BLACK” (directed by Shinya Ohira at David Production)
“BLACK” was previously featured at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival in the Official category of its Official Selection 2025 and promises a “psychedelic battle between past and present, light and dark, and life and death plays out in the haunted psyche of an Imperial trooper who is on the cusp of defeat.” In an interview with Crunchyroll News, the short’s co-producer Jacob Ayres revealed, “We wanted to make his [Ohira’s] ideal episode, and so a lot of the animators that we ended up working with aren’t in-house, actually, none of them are. They were people that Ohira-san wanted us to approach, and that’s why we worked with a lot of new and upcoming talent that he found online as well.”
Earlier this year, it was announced that “The Ninth Jedi” will be expanded into a Star Wars: Visions Presents limited series”.
Star Wars: Visions Volume 1 was introduced in 2021. 2023’s Volume 2 featured contributions from non-Japanese animation studios.
