“#Watch ATARASHII GAKKO! Recreate Beastie Boys’ ‘Intergalactic’ Music Video”
The Japanese girl group and 88rising artist just dropped their own 80-second version of Beastie Boys’ 1998 video, “Intergalactic.” Donning similar fluorescent outfits, hard hats, and goggles that (Koji) Japanese street construction workers wear, the quartet’s “not official” version also featured a miniature version of the original’s robot.
“AG!’s tribute to Beastie Boys where they channel their Beastie Boys to be Beastie Girls,” they wrote. Both were shot in Shinjuku City in Tokyo.
ATARASHII GAKKO! are keeping busy with live performances and are slated to perform this weekend at Head in the Clouds in Pasadena, along with JOJI, NIKI, CL, Saweetie, DPR LIVE, Rich Brian, and more.
In September, they released the stunt-heavy “Pineapple Kryptonite.” Earlier this year, they teamed up with Indonesian rapper Warren Hue for the dance music-inspired “Freaks.”
“Intergalactic” was the Beastie Boys’ first single from their fifth studio album, Hello Nasty. Directed by Adam Yauch under the pseudonym Nathanial Hörnblowér, the Kaiju-inspired music video (specifically the series finale of Giant Robo TV series in Japan) received the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group and MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video, both in 1999.
