“#Watch Jersey’s ‘Pizza Squirrel’ scurry up telephone pole with a slice”

A Hoboken, NJ, squirrel has been captured on video dragging an entire slice of pizza up a telephone pole, before getting comfy and ostensibly preparing to eat the slice on a small shelf amidst the wires.
“Pizza Squirrel, oh my God,” an observer says in a 40-second video of the encounter, which was posted to Twitter on Thursday and has already racked up over 21,000 views as of this writing. “Pizza squirrel, give us a wave!”
The squirrel, climbing a telephone pole with an entire slice in its mouth, then crawls around to the other side of the pole.
“Life always finds a way,” a viewer of the now-viral video comments as the squirrel scurries up toward the mass of coiled cables.
“Absolutely unbelievable moment in Hoboken. Couldn’t believe we saw it with our own eyes. A real life Pizza Squirrel (no relation to pizza rat). Life truly is starting to return,” tweets the podcast-maker who captured the rare sighting on camera.
New Jersey’s official Twitter account took notice.
“Heavy is the head that wears the crown #NJPizzaSquirrel,” @NJGov tweeted shortly after the video was posted, along with a bizarre graphic of a squirrel-like entity wearing a crown and holding a slice of pepperoni pizza.
Hoboken’s pizza squirrel is far from the first to be caught swiping a slice. Two years after the original pizza rat was first virally caught on camera lugging a slice down a set of subway stairs, a pizza squirrel was spotted chowing down in Greenwich Village, even employing “the fold” technique for his cheesy treat. This May, another squirrel was caught in the act of swiping a slice from a pie left at a Los Angeles door.
