Last year, the Girls Band Cry anime staff shared their vision of what the upcoming game would look like: a 2D platformer called Momoka (o) Wasshoi where the player tries to deliver a drunk Momoka — hoisted by Nina and Subaru — to her couch. There was a livestream too, but that still didn’t prepare me for the joke game getting an actual Steam release on September 29 JST.
There are two stages in the game, one where you transport Momoka while avoiding things with your jumps, and one where you try to launch Momoka onto her moving sofa. For some reason, the characters are miniaturized and have to navigate equally shrunken stools and chairs, as well as incoming beer cans.
The Steam launch was first announced on September 14 JST, along with plans for a presence at the now-concluded Tokyo Game Show 2025. Despite having the appearance of a free fan game, Momoka (o) Wasshoi will cost you: it’s currently US$2.80 until October 13 JST, due to a 20% launch discount.
The actual, non-joke Girls Band Cry game was recently revealed to be named Girls Band Cry First Riff. There was also the announcement of a Girls Band Cry anime movie, a new work separate from the upcoming two-part compilation film.
Girls Band Cry is a project from Toei Animation that began in 2023. The TV anime premiered in April 2024, while the compilations will debut on October 3, 2025 JST and November 14, 2025 JST. Toei Animation describes the premise of Girls Band Cry as such:
The main character drops out of high school in her second year, and aims at entering a university while working alone in Tokyo. A girl is betrayed by her friends and doesn’t know what to do. Another girl is abandoned by her parents, and tries to survive in the city by doing part-time jobs. This world lets us down all the time. Nothing goes as planned. But we want something that we can continue to like. We believe there’s a place where we belong. That’s why we sing.
