#The Witcher: D&D Classes Of The Main Characters -BB

Like most modern literary fantasy worlds, Netflix’s The Witcher is modeled after familiar tropes in fantasy universes. There are knights, sorcerers (and sorceresses), as well as elves, dwarfs, and many others. Suffice to say, The Witcher, whether it’s the games, the books, or the show is pretty close to some of the formulas used by Dungeons and Dragons.

This is a good way to make each and every important character more distinguishable for the audience. It also makes their interactions more dynamic and their personalities more varied. After all, you can’t expect a bard to fight his way out of an encounter, unlike with a witcher. Here’s how we classify each of the important characters in the show according to their closest base D&D classes.

10 GERALT – FIGHTER

Geralt is a tricky one since he’s supposed to be a jack-of-all-trades. He’s a magic-user, an alchemist, and a swordsman all at the same time. However, despite Geralt’s wide range of skills and abilities, he mostly still resorts to physical methods. This makes him more of a fighter archetype than anything else.

Truth be told, Geralt and most witchers would most likely be a subclass or multi-classed character in D&D. That subclass would most likely be a spellsword, a combination of a magic-user and a more physically-focused class. This became more evident in the show as Geralt sometimes chooses to combine his signs with his sword-fighting in most encounters.

9 YENNEFER – SORCERER

There’s no doubt about Yennefer’s role in terms of D&D classes. She’s even called a sorceress in the show, so this one’s a no-brainer. Sorcerers are individuals born with the innate capability to control or do magic. Yennefer has this power but had no control over it for most of her youth.

Through other sorceresses, Yennefer was able to harness her potential as one of the most powerful magic-users in the first season of The Witcher. Her penchant for controlling the elements of nature in her own fictional world has made her a formidable sorceress.

8 JASKIER – BARD

Again, we have here another clear-cut D&D representation of a character in The Witcher. Jaskier, or Dandelion for those of you more familiar with the games, is a bard, plain and simple. He’s perhaps even the quintessential bard in any fantasy world. Jaskier has no combat capabilities whatsoever and he also lacks the class’s arcane abilities. He mostly relies on his silver tongue and his lute (and high Charisma stat) to save himself.

Sadly, this doesn’t always work and Jaskier ends up in more dangers than he can handle, and often requires aid from Geralt. As such, Jaskier isn’t that great of a bard when it comes quests. At most, he can compose a song for the whole party to trick villagers into tossing their coins.

7 CIRI – WIZARD

Classifying Ciri is not so simple. She can be as much of a wildcard as Geralt, perhaps even more so since the show hasn’t fully displayed what she’s capable of. That and Ciri will become a witcher, probably next season, meaning she could turn out to be another spellsword like Geralt.

For now, Ciri is just a wizard, which does not equate to her being weaker than Geralt. Quite the opposite, in fact. Wizards are magic-users who are capable of bending reality to their will, including time and space. Ciri definitely fits this profile, though she still has a lot to learn before she can be classified as a full-fledged wizard.

6 TISSAIA DE VRIES – SORCERER

Tissaia de Vries is another character with a clear class. She’s Yennefer’s mentor and is the proprietor of Aretuza, a school for sorceresses. Not much is known about Tissaia’s childhood but like Yennefer, we can assume that she’s also a magically-gifted individual.

Being a teacher of sorcery, Tissaia is notably powerful and even held her own in the Battle of Sodden. She was so potent a teacher that eventually some of her students surpassed her. In any case, Tissaia is a sorceress and most sorceresses in The Witcher have their powers thrust upon them from birth. At least according to the show.

5 ISTREDD – SORCERER

Istredd is actually a sorcerer even though the show makes him appear as more of an archaeologist. So far, one of the few magic spells he has performed in the show is opening a portal for Yennefer’s escape. Beyond that, he hasn’t really shown off his arcane prowess or disposition, even.

However, those of you who have read the books will know that Istredd is good enough at magic to weaponize it. In fact, he has even challenged Geralt of Rivia to a duel to the death. This meant that Istredd is confident enough in his magical skills to fight Geralt. Anyway, his D&D class is pretty much the same as his vocation in the show.

4 RENFRI – FIGHTER

Renfri can be a mixed bag since she wasn’t always a fighter. As a child, she needed to learn how to survive on her own against a cruel medieval dark fantasy world. This could easily make her fall into two categories, namely rogue and fighter. Even so, the show made it clear that Renfri is more attuned with her dexterity and strength than her guile and trickery.

Renfri might have deceived many people, including Geralt, but the way she fought the witcher is nothing short of spectacular. Only a D&D fighter could put up such a show against another, more capable, fighter. Sadly, Renfri lost since she was no match for Geralt, at least at her current level.

3 VILGEFORTZ – SORCERER

Vilgefortz is yet again another wildcard when it comes to D&D classes. He’s a sorcerer, alright– the Brotherhood of Sorcerers even agrees. The thing is, Vilgefortz is not like most other magic-users. He still resorts frequently to physical combat and is very proficient with a sword in the show (it was a bo staff in the books, though).

This easily makes Vilgefortz more of a spellsword than Geralt. Vilgefortz is a master of physical and magical combat. Spoiler alert, In the books, he even defeated the combined forces of Yennefer, Geralt, and the vampire Regis when he turned villainous. Still, the show states the Vilgefortz’s primary role is a sorcerer’s, so let’s just put him there.

2 DARA – ROGUE

Dara is Ciri’s elven friend who helped rescue her back when she was fleeing from the Nilfgaardian soldiers. He also helped Ciri reach Brokilon forest and avoid getting tricked by a Doppler. Dara might not show substantial fighting skills, but the rogue in him is strong.

After all, he’s a stray elf who serves under Filavandrel, elven ruler-turned guerilla after most of the humans defeated the elves. Being a member of Filavandrel’s fallen kingdom, Dara has learned to be stealthy to survive human cruelty. He was also forced to steal, forage, and hide most of the time, given how his kind always suffers violence at the hands of humans.

1 MOUSESACK – DRUID

Last but not least we have Mousesack. For those of you who have played The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, Mousesack’s other name is Ermion, the head druid of Skellige. Hence, it’s pretty clear what Mousesack is. He’s a druid despite looking more like a sorcerer in the show due to his attire.

Of course, this all due to the fact that Mousesack was in Cintra instead of his natural environment in Skellige. Given the right place, Mousesack/Ermion can easily utilize the primal powers of nature. For some reason, however, the show killed him off, so we might never see Mousesack again even though he’s still alive in the books and the games.
