NHK Prepares to Stream to Smart Devices Starting in Spring -BB

The NHK has existed since 1925, and made the jump to television in 1950. Now, 70 years after entering the TV market, the broadcaster is making plans to go digital with streaming to smart devices.

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications approved the NHK’s plans for continuous simultaneous distribution—in other words, simulcasting of all their content online. The broadcaster accepted a proposal to amend said plans, requesting a new management system to reduce costs of Internet usage in conjunction with the new move.

NHK broadcast several popular anime titles, including Attack on Titan (as of Season 3) and VINLAND SAGA. What effect this will have on streaming rights within Japan is uncertain so far. However, the broadcaster—which is maintained via a public license fee—will not charge extra for their digital service.

Streaming capabilities are expected to go live in April.
