Path of the Warrior review for VR 3

Like pretty much every gamer on the planet, I was glued to my TV on the night of the 2019 Game Awards. There was a time where I would consider skipping the event and catching up with the cliff notes later, but that was the shows of the past. We certainly are at an exciting time in the world of video games with new consoles on the horizon as well as all sorts of exciting game announcements. One such announcement came on the night of the Awards show in the form of Path of the Warrior for the Oculus Quest and Rift.

The trailer itself would catch the eye of any gamer that played the side-scrolling brawlers of the 1990s. A guy walks into a bar full of punk-looking misfits and they immediately move in to beat him to a pulp and just as the action is about to happen, the camera zooms in and you are now in the VR landscape. All my memories of Double Dragon came flooding back into my thoughts and I knew that I needed to get my hands on Path of the Warrior as quickly as possible. The story is only as complex as a game like this needs to be, and that in itself is very simple, “All the gangs of the city are banding together under one massive group under the leadership of one evil overlord, you kick their arse and ask questions later, The End”

Getting around in Path of the Warrior is critical as the action is pretty fast-paced. I admit that I am not a fan of games that incorporate the teleportation method of travel, but Path of the Warrior does not use that method, rather it lets you use the analogs on the Oculus controllers to move around and change the camera. Normally your hands are left open and by simply pressing the trigger buttons you will make a fist, but when you hover over items in your environment, you can also pick up weapons from baseball bats to cue balls and everything in-between.

There are a total of 5 levels to fight your way through, with each level only taking about 20-30 minutes to complete. Don’t worry about getting completely run over by a swarm of enemies. They come out in waves and generally speaking, you will never be fighting more than a total of 4 or 5 at a time. As you beat up the bad guys, your special meter will power up and after it is full, you can unleash your special ability where you go into a rage and one punch to enemies results in a one-hit knockout. The feature is not CURRENTLY in the game, but the developers are working on putting multiplayer into the game. So much like Jimmy and Billy Lee, eventually you will have the ability to kick these gangs butts up and down the street with no problems!

It may be a really short game, but I really enjoyed playing Path of the Warrior. I’ve never really thought about a sidescrolling brawler as a VR title, so I was pleasantly surprised by how good of a job that Twisted Pixel Games did with turning the genre into a VR title. I admit that I wish that there was more content as well as some variety as by the end of the fifth level, the gameplay does start to feel recycled, but that doesn’t change the fact that the game is still a great addition to the fantastic growing library of VR titles in the Oculus store.
