Resident Evil 2 Remake Sells Over 5 Million Copies, Outselling Original Game

People can’t get enough of the zombie action from the Resident Evil series. With the series releasing a remake of Resident Evil 2 in January of 2019, and a remake of Resident Evil 3 coming in April 2020, fans of the franchise have a lot of zombie slayings to look forward to, especially with Resident Evil 3 being packaged with the delightfully ghoulish online Resident Evil Resistance multiplayer game.

On January 30, we reported that the Resident Evil 2 remake shipped 3 million units worldwide during the game’s first week, beating out a series record set by Resident Evil 7, which shipped out 3 million units in 12 days. In a press release on December 11, Capcom announced that the Resident Evil 2 remake had surpassed the sales original PlayStation game with over 5 million units sold in its first year. The original Resident Evil 2 had sold 4.96 million units for Capcom since it’s release in 1998 for the PlayStation.

The statistics for the sales of the original game on Capcom’s website claim that the 4.96 million units were for the PlayStation versions only, not including the Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo GameCube releases. The remake statistics include sales on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

The Resident Evil 2 remake launched on the aforementioned platforms on January 25. The Resident Evil 3 remake will be taking a bite out of the competition on April 3, 2020.
