Indian smartphone market for the first time surpassed the US on an annual level, becoming the second-largest smartphone market globally as per Counterpoint’s latest Market Monitor. The shipments in India touched 158 million in 2019 with 7% year-on-year growth. This is due to the growth of the mid-tier segment in India where Chinese brands aggressively introduced many flagship-grade features and capabilities in smartphones. The market landscape too was ruled by Chinese players, with as many as four Chinese companies in the top 5. Little surprising then that Chinese brands share jumped to 72% in 2019 compared to 60% a year ago. During 2019, all major Chinese players also expanded their footprint in both offline and online channels to gain market share.
