Witcher Season 2 Will Address Witchers & Monsters Going Extinct

Netflix’s The Witcher season 2 is set to deal with the dwindling populations of monsters and monster hunters called Witchers. The Netflix series The Witcher is based on the book series of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, in which readers follow the exploits of the infamous Geralt of Rivia. Sapkowski’s books were also adapted into a series of video games, developed by CD Projekt Red.

The Witcher premiered in December 2019 to mixed reviews from critics, but that did little to stop it from becoming one of the most in-demand shows on television. Fantasy fans around the world have heaped praise on to the show for its excellently choreographed fight scenes, and its authentically detailed world. And it wasn’t just fantasy fans that enjoyed the show, Netflix apparently did as well, evident by the fact that they ordered The Witcher season 2 before season 1 aired.

The Witcher showrunner Lauren Hissrich recently took to Reddit to talk to fans and preview what’s to come in season 2 of the show. In her AMA (ask me anything) on the subreddit r/wiedzmin, Polish for The Witcher, Hissrich talked candidly to fans about a plethora of topics. Many fans brought up the fact that the first season of the show had a lot of monsters, which is something that doesn’t tonally match The Witcher stories. It’s an important discrepancy to acknowledge too, as the story’s protagonist Geralt is a monster hunter, so if there are no monsters, he becomes somewhat obsolete. In responding to this criticism, Hissrich said:

„Season one spans about thirty years for Geralt, so monsters aren’t going extinct that whole time. But it’s something we delve into a lot more (in both cases) in season two. If there were less monsters at the very beginning of the series, then Witchers wouldn’t be as needed. They would disappear, as would their legend, and the hatred would dissipate. We needed the hatred in the series, to understand why our hero was an outsider. So we made the choice to keep the monsters more present for these thirty years.“

It’s worth noting that season 1 of the show isn’t all about Geralt fighting monsters. In the 30 years the season spans, the unnamed continent goes through a transitional period as the empire Nilfgaard expands their dominion. This causes a bevy of side effects, including the relocation and eradication of monsters. Geralt does kill a lot of monsters in The Witcher season 1 but he does have other interests too, such as visiting brothels and insomnia induced fishing.

The first season of The Witcher laid a sound foundation for a world that’s ready to explode with conflict and creativity. Judging by her comments on The Witcher AMA, Hissrich seems to be the right person in charge, and cognizant of changes that could elevate the show to new heights. As of now, it appears that The Witcher season 2 is due to arrive on Netflix sometime in 2021.
