#AI is reshaping rummy, online gaming -BB

Online rummy is a Rs 2,200 crore industry in India, accounting for half of the country’s online gaming business. But it comes with serious problems. Players tend to get addicted to it, often exhausting themselves and their money. Players tend to game the system, by colluding with other players.

Big data, AI and ML are now being used to deal with these issues. Sameer Barde, CEO of the non-for-profit The Rummy Federation, says they are increasingly using these technologies to track player behaviour, detect instances of collusion among players, detect fraud, and even for customer retention.

Technologies like AI, ML, cloud, data analytics are disrupting the gaming ecosystem, not just at the development stage but also improving the user experience to a never before seen extent

Junglee Games, which has rummy among its portfolio of games, proactively gives players a cool off period when the AI system flags a problem – playing for too long, or losing too much money.

“We also rely on complex data-science models for real-time fraud detention to ensure fair play for players at all times,” says Ankush Gera, founder & CEO of Junglee Games, which has about 100-odd techies developing solutions inhouse. Frauds are often done by players passing cards to each other on the table or players continuously playing with the same opponent or same group. Their winning/losing patterns can even by analysed to detect money laundering.

Online gaming is complex as there are lakhs of events in a game and everything is happening in real time. “These technologies help us track what someone did in a particular second and alert us so that we can take swift action,” says Kapil Rathee, president of Junglee Games.

Ray tracing or RTX is the holy grail of gaming graphics, simulating the physical behaviour of light to bring real-time cinematic quality rendering to even the most visually intense games. This has been made possible through a combination of elements coming together, including the leveraging of AI

He says AI is also being leveraged for forecasting, as all games have seasonality. If the system forecasts a huge increase in gamers tomorrow, the company can scale up infrastructure, such as servers, to prevent glitches and downtime.

AI/ML are also becoming big in other games. Manvendra Shukul, CEO and co-founder of Lakshya Digital, says the latest trend in games is the use of AI/ML in procedural content generation (PCG), a process of creating data algorithmically rather than manually. “PCG was used to create the unique islands of Just Cause 3 (a game that Lakshya helped develop) and the 18 quintillion planets in No Man’s Sky’s universe — including topography, climate, flora, fauna and different space aliens.” You don’t have to write code to define each planet, for instance. The algorithm will generate that for you. And the AI will ensure it’s intelligently done, with lots of variety.

Currently the actions of characters are programmed. But soon, the game characters could adapt on their own using ML algorithms to make the games more challenging for the human player

ML is also helping the AI-controlled bots in single-player games to play in more sophisticated ways, says Zain Fahadh, founder of Ogrehead Studios. Earlier, the AI used to cheat in games to defeat the player (by not following the same rules). “However, with ML, they are now able to learn from players all around the world and provide a better experience for gamers,” Fahadh says.
