#Chucky Killed His Own Mother (But Not In The Child’s Play Movies) -BB

As if Chucky wasn’t bad enough both as a human and a doll, the novelization of Child’s Play 2 reveals that he actually killed his own mother. Before becoming a murderous toy, Chucky was of course a human serial killer named Charles Lee Ray, dubbed The Lakeshore Strangler by the police. As the Child’s Play franchise has gone on, more and more has been revealed about Chucky’s human past, such as his love affair with girlfriend Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), and unhealthy obsession with Sarah Pierce.

Chucky clearly isn’t the kind of person capable of having a conventional relationship with someone, whether that be a friend, relative, or significant other. That’s one thing that makes he and Tiffany so perfect for each other, as both enjoy killing people, and neither tends to take any crap, even from each other. It’s a volatile combination, but a mostly functional one, as seen by their continued alliance in most recent film Cult of Chucky.

One aspect of Chucky’s human life that’s never really been explored onscreen is his childhood, and relationship with his own parents, although the official plot synopsis for Syfy’s upcoming Chucky TV show hints at that not being the case for much longer. For now though, Chucky’s childhood was already addressed a bit in the official novelization of 1990 sequel Child’s Play 2.

In the Child’s Play 2 movie novelization, written by Matthew J. Costello, Chucky’s childhood is delved into to a degree. It’s revealed that Chucky’s home life was terrible, with a father who was never around and a mother who was a dwarf, putting Chucky’s ultimately small stature as a Good Guy doll in a new light. Chucky was ruthlessly teased by other kids due to his mom’s size, and to top it off, she was also abusive to him. Eventually, Chucky strangled her to death, setting the stage for his future „occupation.“

While the above is an interesting addition to Chucky’s backstory, it’s also not hard to see why it wasn’t depicted onscreen. For one, there’s unfortunate implications involved with depicting Chucky’s mom being a little person as a problem, even if she’s also a bad person irrespective of her size. Also, having Chucky commit matricide would be a bit overly harsh for the average studio horror film, especially as part of a franchise which often swung toward the comedic end of the spectrum. It’ll be interesting to see if any of this written history is carried over to the Child’s Play TV show.
