“Effi o Blaenau | TAKE ONE Magazine Watch Online” Reworking the Greek myths is a living tradition. EFFI O BLAENAU, Marc Evans’ Welsh-language drama, takes Greek mythology and transports its tropes and tragedies to a rural Welsh housing estate. Based on the award-winning one-woman play Iphighenia in Splott by Gary Owen, the film follows Effi…
“Rebuilding | TAKE ONE Magazine Watch Online” When everything you have is gone, how can you pick up the pieces? This is the premise of REBUILDING, Max Walker-Silverman’s gentle human drama about a rancher who loses his home and livelihood following a devastating wildfire. Living in a FEMA camp with the other displaced, he struggles…
“Think of England | TAKE ONE Magazine Watch Online” The brief synopsis of THINK OF ENGLAND, a story based on rumours the UK government commissioned pornography to boost World War II troop morale, reads a little like something boldly pitched as a modern incarnation of bawdy CARRY ON humour. Inviting a Glasgow Film Festival audience,…
“Wuthering Heights | TAKE ONE Magazine | Watch Online” Emerald Fennell manages to achieve some new and striking things with her adaptation of Emily Brontë’s most famous novel. However, it’s an odd irony that in trying to be stirring and daring, WUTHERING HEIGHTS ends up rather blunted and safe. In the lead-up to the film’s…
“Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die Watch Online” Director Gore Verbinski’s impact at the box office probably outweighs the cinematic accomplishments of the films themselves. Though the film shifts between identities in a way that parallels its characters, it ends up…
“Rose of Nevada | TAKE ONE Magazine Watch Online” A fishing boat mysteriously returned to harbour after being lost for thirty years. From this image, Mark Jenkin weaves a haunting tale of dream-logic and the ghosts of England’s past. Jenkin’s unique filming style lends texture and physicality to this blend of British social realism and…
“Everybody to Kenmure Street | TAKE ONE Magazine Watch Online” On May 13th 2021, immigration enforcement officers came to Kenmure Street in Glasgow and detained two men. “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple | TAKE ONE Magazine Watch Online” As belated sequels go, 28 YEARS LATER was much more interesting than it had any right to be. Danny Boyle’s return to a zombie-ridden UK after 23 years was a thematically dense but muddled affair. Nia DaCosta takes directorial duties for this sequel,…
“The Testament of Ann Lee | TAKE ONE Magazine Watch Online” In THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE, the team from THE BRUTALIST turn their lens from the fictional to a “real legend”. In a mostly secular Hollywood, where every musician represents a Messiah whose tale has to be told, comes an older tale of song…
