FoxyLand review for PlayStation 4 5
Foxyland tells the story of Foxy who has to save his girlfriend Jenny. Unlike most games with a similar premise, Foxy doesn’t have to conquer evil or insurmountable odds to do so; only collecting cherries and gems will allow our little hero to save the love of his life.

FoxyLand is a 2D platformer game where our little protagonist needs to go from start to finish of each level in order to unlock the next one. However, in order to be able to unlock the exit, Foxy needs to collect a set amount of gems. Each level has a pre-determined quantity of gems and Foxy needs to collect them all; most of them are obvious, but other gems are well hidden. Most levels are pretty straightforward, but others will require players to explore levels a bit either for the gem or a way to access hidden or out of reach gems.

Including obstacles, Foxy will run into enemies. While he cannot defend himself per se, he can at least jump on top of enemies to get rid of them. When squashing an enemy, they will drop additional cherries. Sadly, enemies regenerate so it can prove annoying when trying to reach an out of reach gem surrounded by spikes. Re-spawned enemies won’t drop any additional cherries so you can’t farm them.

Foxy has three hearts to help him get through each level. After three hits, it’s game over. Unfortunately, during the majority of the game, nothing can restore health, so if you’re down to 1 heart, it can get tricky at times.

The game features a total of 36 levels to finish the main game. There’s three additional Halloween themed (they have pumpkins scattered throughout). All 39 levels get slightly harder as you progress through. It’s a bit unbalanced as some levels will be painfully annoying while the next one will be a cakewalk.

FoxyLand also has a bit of replay value. For each level, you can earn up to 3 stars. The number of stars is dependent on how many cherries you collect. So if you’re a perfectionist, you can always return to any previously completed levels and go for all the cherries. Trophies/achievements are pretty straight forward; complete the game and you get them all. Each playthrough can take about an hour depending on the number of times you die.

FoxyLand is a decent 2D platformer with a cute 8bit aesthetic. It looks fine, but visually speaking, NES games look better than this. Foxy looks a bit cross-eyed. It features a low quantity of pixels where the enemies are distinguishable, but there have been much better retro-looking games out there this year. Sound-wise, the soundtrack is ok; nothing really special or noteworthy. When trying to focus on completing levels, it’s pretty easy to drown out the soundtrack.

FoxyLand is a fun and interesting 2D platformer. Its level design is decent and addictive enough to give a “one more level” type of feeling; despite feeling a bit oddly balanced. Replay value is sure to keep playing enthralled for a few runs, but once you’re done, you’re done. It’s a fun diversion between AAA releases.
