198X Review 4

198X tells the story of Kid a teenager caught in the middle of the limitations of innocent youth and the obligations of impending adulthood. One day, Kid discovers a local arcade, filled with doors to new worlds and possibilities; every visit means embarking on a new adventure all of which leads Kid to find new meaning with videogames.

198X is definitely a unique experience as it meshes multiple genres across the game. Each genre tackled by the game represents a new world/level to take on in a different genre. The game starts off with a Streets of Rage like beat’em up level; where you can pick up weapons and health items to ensure you reach the ending. Then there’s a racing level akin to classic games like Rad Racer or Top Gear (the Super NES game) or the more recent Horizon Chase Turbo as you zig-zag through traffic and various landscapes.

198X Review

Difficulty ramps up a notch with a tricky shump level akin to the classic Gradius or R-Type series. While not as hardcore as classic shumps, there are tricky sections that all lead to an interesting perfectly balanced boss fight. You’ll also come across a Shinobi like on-rail level where you’ll have to act quickly to dodge a tricky pursuer and deadly obstacles. All of these adventures lead to a Shin Megami Tensei like first-person RPG where you’ll navigate through a dungeon hunting three dragons which then leads to facing off against the ultimate enemy.

Each level is about 10-20 minutes in length, dependent on how many times you die, it can be a bit longer. Most of the levels have forgiving checkpoints to avoid frustration when failing. Some levels are pretty much “unfaillable” such as the initial level, the beat ’em up, and the racing one. If you’ve played any beat’em up in your life or racing games like Square’s Rad Racer or OutRun, you’ll do fine.

Then, when tackling the shmup and Shinobi like levels, the difficulty ramps up a bit. Shumps are notorious for their high level of difficulty, albeit it is a bit more forgiving here as you can keep power-ups when taking damage. The Shinobi level is somewhat rough as trying to escaping the mysterious pursuer while avoid spikes can be difficult if you don’t feel your reflexes up to par. The RPG level is actually pretty fun; its TRON-esque design is interesting but unfortunately, it sorts of requires you die often at first. You’re crazily underpowered for the first enemies, however, considering that you keep your XP when dying, after a few deaths, you’ll have control and feel yourself climb alongside the difficulty curve.

Considering the game is inspired by classic genres and gameplay from the 8/16bit era, each level is easy to pick up and play and the controls are as tight as you’d expect from the type of games. The story is told through comic book-like cutscenes in between games. It’s really interesting and it felt like nostalgia as a gamer who grew up on the 1980s. It’s all beautifully told and the cutscenes are bright, colorful and inspire nostalgia.

198X Review 2

198X’s presentation is solid from top to bottom. The visuals are akin to the classic 16bit games of the golden era of gaming. Colorful, bright and a realy 1980’s feel to it. Each of the different levels properly represents their respective genre and look and feel different; as if you’d switch cartridges in between levels. The soundtrack is fun, interesting and again matches the levels’ genre. It’s a 16bit synthwave inspired score soothing no matter the action on-screen keeping calm and relax for even the most frustrating sequences.

198X is definitely worth your hard-earned money. From the game’s unique and soothing presentation to the diversity of solid gameplay in this package, it is definitely worth your time. It plays well in short or long burst and considering the game cover five different genres across five levels, it always like something new. Don’t miss out on this gem.
