How to setup Parental control in Google Play Store

We have already covered how you can take complete control over your kids’ smartphone using Google Family Lin k app (link). But, if you do not want to go with that tricky process and just looking to put age restrictions on the apps and games shown in the Google Play Store or want to prevent any unauthorised purchases from your kids. Google Play Store comes with a built-in parental control option that not only filters the app and games as per the set guidelines but also requires a passcode for any purchase made on the Google Play Store.

The process itself is straightforward, which only requires Google Play Store, which comes pre-installed on almost every Android smartphone.

Step to activate Parental controls on Google Play Store

To activate Parental controls, open Google Play Store and tap on the menu bar from the top right. Go to ‘Setting’ and locate the Parental controls option. To turn it on, you will need to set up a PIN code so that your kids won’t be able to turn it off.

After this, you’ll have to set content restrictions for apps & games, films and music manually as Google Play Store by default does not restrict anything.

To do this, tap on Apps & games option and choose the age rating that you want to see in the Play Store. Repeat the same for Films and Music and tap on Save in every section.

After this, Google Play Store will only show your child all the content with the specified ratings and even if they try to install any app by searching it on Google, they will require the PIN to do that.

How to prevent unauthorised purchases on Play Store

To do this, head to Settings, scroll down and tap on Require authentication for purchases and select the option ‘For all purchases through Google Play on this device’. After this, it will ask you to verify your account password to save changes.

You can also activate Biometric authentication for purchases from the Settings for faster authorisation.

Post this, Your kid won’t be able to make any random purchases or in-app purchase using Google Play Store.
