Japan Box Office: My Hero Academia 2nd Film Surpasses 1.1 Billion Yen in 3 Weeks

According to the latest box office report in Japan, My Hero Academia THE MOVIE Heroes: Rising, the second feature film in the My Hero Academia anime franchise, had earned 1.1 billion yen in three weeks of release, which was 88.7% of the first three-week gross of the first film My Hero Academia: Two Heroes released in August 2018.

The 104-minute film was released in 312 theaters across Japan on December 20, 2019, and ranked third in its first two weekends of December 21-22 and December 28-29, then dropped one position to fourth in its third weekend of January 4-5, 2020. If the pace continues like this, it seems difficult that the second film can surpass the first film’s total domestic box office gross of 1.72 billion yen.

The Shinkalion anime franchise’s first feature film Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion: Mirai kara Kita Shinsoku no ALFA-X (Godspeed ALFA-X that comes from the future) was released in 189 theaters on December 27, 2019. It ranked eighth in its opening weekend, then disappeared from the box office top 10 in its second. Its cumulative box office is currently unknown.

Meanwhile, the 48-year-old Lupin The Third anime franchise’s first full 3DCG feature film Lupin The Third: The First ranked tenth in its fifth weekend, one position up from the previous weekend, and its box office gross had surpassed the 1 billion yen mark.
