#Obi-Wan Show Story Was Too Similar To The Mandalorian -BB

The story for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series set to premiere on Disney+ was reportedly too similar to The Mandalorian. The new Star Wars show sees the return of Ewan McGregor as the iconic Jedi Knight. Obi-Wan Kenobi first appeared in Star Wars: A New Hope, played by legendary actor Alec Guinness. He was the first person to teach Luke Skywalker about the ways of the Force, as well as gifting him his first lightsaber. He met his end at the hands of Darth Vader, but continued to aid Luke as a force ghost. In the prequel trilogy, Ewan McGregor was cast to play a younger version of the character, and acted as the mentor to a young Anakin Skywalker. McGregor as Kenobi is often seen as a bright spot in the heavily criticized prequel films.

After Disney expressed interest in making Star Wars movies that were separate from the main Skywalker storyline, fans immediately clamored for a movie based on Obi-Wan Kenobi. In 2017, Disney announced that there were plans to develop a spinoff movie based around the character. However, after the lackluster performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Disney scrapped any plans for a movie and later announced that they would be developing a series on the Disney+ streaming platform instead. Unfortunately, fans of the Jedi Knight have to wait even longer to see the character on screen again.

It seems that the TV show has been put on hold indefinitely. According to The Hollywood Reporter, one of the main reasons for the delay is that the script for the show might be too similar to another Star Wars television show, The Mandalorian. The story for the Obi-Wan show might have involved Kenobi acting as a protector of a young Luke and possibly Leia, which might’ve been too similar to the Mandalorian watching over The Child, aka Baby Yoda. Hossein Amini was originally signed on to write for the series, but Disney is reportedly looking for new writers.

The Mandalorian proved to be a runaway hit for Disney+. The show has been commended for bringing an authentic Western feel to this fantasy universe, as well as introducing new fan-favorite characters. Of course the biggest thing to come out of the show is The Child, dubbed online as Baby Yoda. The young creature has become somewhat of a phenomenon, interesting even non-Star Wars fans. The Mandalorian‘s adventures with The Child will continue this fall, as the show has been renewed for a second season.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series was reportedly in the middle of pre-production when it was put on hold. Another side effect of this delay is that the series, which was originally set to have six episodes, will likely be shortened to four. This news comes at a complicated time for Lucasfilm and Disney. Though The Mandalorian has been a huge success, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final film in the sequel trilogy, was met with mixed reviews and is the lowest grossing film of the Star Wars trilogy. Since this was the last film in the Skywalker saga, Disney and Lucasfilm have much to consider when thinking about the future of the Star Wars franchise.
