#Random House Launches New Line of Young Reader Graphic Novels -BB

Random House Children’s Books has officially launched Random House Graphics. The imprint will specialize in new graphic novel imprints for younger children. Its first release is Runaway Princess by Johan Troïanowksi, which tells the story of a bored princess named Robin who meets new friends while embarking on an adventure through a magical world.

News of the imprint emerged back in May 2018 with the hiring of Gina Gagliano, previously associate director of First Second. Gagliano will serve as editorial director of Random House Graphics. The line is expected to offer a mix of primarily middle-grade level graphic novels, with a few young adult graphic novels and early reader titles mixed in.

Graphic novels for young readers represent a booming market within the comic book industry. Titles such as Dogman by Dav Pilkey (also of Captain Underpants fame) and Raina Telgemeier’s best-selling Guts represent major success stories within the industry. Surprisingly, such youth-oriented properties represent the biggest market for graphic novels sales in bookstores, with manga second and superheroes a distant third. Random House is wisely trying to capitalize on this booming readership.

Random House Graphics has a diverse line-up of graphic novels already slated for release. This includes Bug Boys by Laura Knetzger, an early reader graphic novel about two young beetles who explore both their surroundings as well as their own complicated thoughts and emotions. Their first young adult release will be Jessi Zabarsky’s Witchlight, which follows a young girl abducted by a witch, who is in search of the missing part of her soul. There’s also Suncatcher by Jose Pimienta, which follows a teenager who discovers she must write the perfect song to free her grandmother’s soul, which is trapped within her own guitar

Overall, it looks like Random House has a variety of interesting and exciting new titles for its Random House Graphics launch. While these titles might not seem to have much in common with the capes and cowls of the traditional comic book industry, it’s certainly possible that some of these graphic novel creators could be tapped in the future to write for companies like Marvel and DC, especially if their graphic novel outings are a success. The two companies have struggled with all-ages properties, and will certainly seek to tap into creators with a reliable track record with such an audience.

Random House Graphics could be just the place to watch for emerging talent for the superhero comic book industry in the future.
