„The X-Men’s Apocalypse is Officially a [SPOILER] Now, Too?“

Since the beginning of Marvel’s X-Men relaunch headed by Jonathan Hickman, the ancient evil known as Apocalypse has taken on a new role as a thoughtful statesman rather than a conqueror who subjugates mutants and humans alike based on a twisted interpretation of Darwinism. He called this an adaptation, becoming something new as the world changed around him. As Excalibur #6 by Tini Howard and Marcus To brings the series‘ first arc to its Otherworld-shattering conclusion, we see what that new role is meant to be: a master of magic and the power behind the throne of England’s faerie realm.

Apocalypse (which isn’t the name he currently prefers to go by but is how this article will refer to him, as his new mutant name is impossible to write in human alphabets) has been studying magic over the course of the series, setting up every stage of the conflict in the first arc in order to pursue that interest. While it’s not clear what the source is of the Krakoan plants growing in Morgan Le Fay’s scrying pool, several characters blame Apocalypse for this, and it seems like the most likely answer. When Le Fay mounted a counterattack, it lured the Braddock family to Otherworld, which caused the current Captain Britain to be replaced by his sister Betsy Braddock, a mutant that Apocalypse can work with on Krakoa. He convinced Rogue to drain the power leaching from the gate created through the scrying pool, requiring Betsy to form a new Excalibur team and go to Underworld to save her.

The result, as issue 6 shows, is that Morgan Le Fay has been dethroned in favor of Brian and Betsy’s reality-warping brother Jamie. With „King Jamie the Mad“ on the throne, the reality-warping dangers to Otherworld (like Jubilee’s baby, also introduced into the plot by Apocalypse) are entirely under mutant control. Apocalypse takes no time to create a new magical study there, adding powerful new secrets to his grimoire (which readers have seen snippets from over the course of the series) and dissecting Morgan Le Fay alive in order to study the source of her powers.

What’s the next step for Apocalypse? He’s made a strange discovery inside the body of the former witch-queen’s body which will likely fuel his future studies. The exact nature of the object is unknown to readers, but the immortal mutant’s notes refer to it as „Component Y“, an „unidentified malignant component“ which seems to come from „an ancient darkness“. The object may have some relation to Exodus, an immensely powerful psychic who has been resurrected and serves on the Krakoan ruling council with Apocalypse. The gigantic blue sorcerer’s grimoire mentions Exodus as a future addition to his coven, and the notes on Component Y are dated to the 13th century, the era when Exodus first lived (and met another major English hero).

Beyond that, anything could happen. Apocalypse has designs on reviving ancient mutantdom that seem to be affecting Otherworld in more ways than are immediately obvious. His grimoire speaks of wresting magic from mundane humans and making it the property of Homo Superior, in which case he would likely be the Sorcerer Supreme of a new age. Stephen Strange will have to watch out because if Apocalypse’s scheme reaches fruition, he will be a relic of a forgotten human past.
