#Things You Didn’t Know About The Simpsons Cops -BB

In the world of The Simpsons, there are quite a few areas of particular incompetence. We’ve got Apu and his unhygienic, poorly-stocked Kwik-E-Mart, Principal Skinner and his terrible school-running abilities, and of course, the bribe hungry, law avoiding police department.

Considering the show has been running for so long, we’ve learnt a lot about these cops. Here are ten interesting things you may have missed about Eddie, Lou, Wiggum, and their occasional comrades.

10 Chief Wiggum Had Ambitions From Youth

During the time period in which The Simpsons is set, Clancy Wiggum is head of the Springfield Police Department. This was no accident, despite how incompetent he is at his (very important) job.

As a kid, Wiggum would head up the ‘cop’ side during games of Cops And Robbers with Homer and their friends, while also providing his services to the role of hall monitor at Springfield Elementary. He took his role pretty seriously, showing his desire to one day land a police job. He then worked his way up through the force, training as a teenager and once taking on the role of drug officer.

9 Marge Once Joined Up

In the 1995 episode ‘The Springfield Connection’, Marge is inspired to train as a police officer after chasing down Snake when he cheats Homer out of $20. She realizes she needs the adrenaline again, so signs up and proves herself to an amused Chief Wiggum. She takes her role pretty seriously, settling an argument between Seymour and Agnes, while turning down her first bribe from Apu. She ends up making the lives of her children worse as well, as making Bart wear safety gear to go skateboarding gets him beaten up. Despite trying to remain a force for good, Marge eventually quits when the corruption of her fellow officers gets too much.

8 And So Did Santa’s Little Helper

Despite his frequent depiction as cowardly, Santa’s Little Helper also got his time to shine as a brave police dog. After rescuing Homer from a maze, he was enrolled in the police force and partnered with Lou, with whom he worked brilliantly to stop crime through some of the first competent police work the show has ever demonstrated.

Eventually, he comes to Bart’s rescue, saving him and having the Simpson family take back ownership of the delightful greyhound from Lou. That, sadly, marked the end of his impressive policing career.

7 Chief Wiggum Has Taken A Lot Of Bribes

Considering he is the head of the entire Springfield police department, it’s a little worrying just how many bribes Chief Wiggum has taken during his tenure. One of the most worrying examples of this shows that the bottom of his badge specifically states: ‘cash bribes only’. As such, he refused to accept stolen wedding presents as a bribe from Bart. His corruption doesn’t stop there, as he often turns a blind eye to Mayor Quimby’s disregard for the law, and half of the time doesn’t even respond to real crimes taking place in Springfield.

6 Their Structure Doesn’t Make Much Sense

There are quite a few things about the structure of the Springfield police department that make basically no sense whatsoever. Firstly, they only really seem to have three permanent staff, even though various cars and unnamed faces appear when they’re needed.

On top of that, despite being specific to Springfield, they’re often seen out on call in surrounding areas, which seems to suggest that they’re actually county police. Beyond that, they also carry out courtroom security, which would imply that they’re actually a Sherriff’s department.  Confusing.

5 Wiggum Has A Few Side Hustles

Despite his love for the force and commitment to his poorly done job, Wiggum doesn’t devote his entire time to police duties. He spent a while in a barbershop quartet called the Be Sharps alongside Homer, Seymour, and Apu, but was thrown out when it was decided his role was ‘too village people’. He is also a coach for the Mighty Pigs hockey team, for whom he would often bet against (just another example of his corruption). He is also an avid chili cook, entering his Guatemalan Insanity Pepper chili into a competition and turning Homer into a hallucinating madman in the process.

4 Eddie And Lou Don’t Have Last Names

Despite having appeared in The Simpsons for around 30 years, Eddie and Lou have never been given second names. While Eddie hasn’t had any lines in many years, you’d think at least Lou would have been fleshed out a bit by now?

In the season 13 episode ‘The Frying Game’, Lou reveals that, like Cher (and Beyoncé, Pele, and Liberace) both of the supporting officers have mononymous names, and were actually never given a surname at all! This makes everything make that little bit more sense and really makes things easier for the unintelligent Chief Wiggum.

3 Lou Was Once Yellow

Remember when Smithers was black instead of yellow during season 1? There are few episodes in which this is turned on its head and Lou was yellow instead of black. His first episode portraying him as black was ‘Bart Vs Thanksgiving’, and before that, the Caucasian version of Lou had been seen in ‘Krusty Gets Busted’ and ‘There’s No Disgrace Like Home’. Interestingly, many years later, the episode ‘Sweet And Sour Marge’ saw Lou return very briefly, and accidentally, back to his yellow skin color.

2 They Have A Robot Called Brenda

During the episode ‘Brawl In The Family’, it is revealed that the Springfield police department has a robot called Brenda at their disposal. She is dressed in a police uniform but sits on a creepy metal tank.

Her most impressive maneuver was trapping the Simpson family in a giant taffy ball, but things went a bit far when she wanted to stop Chief Wiggum from taking over her case. He switched her off (probably out of fear for his own job) and we haven’t seen the law enforcing robot again.

1 They Have Competition

Very briefly, the trio of Lenny, Carl and Homer gave the Springfield police department a bit of serious competition. Considering the corruption and inability to perform their jobs, the police department was almost immediately shut down by Mayor Quimby and the job of protecting Springfield was handed over to Homer and his team. When it all seems to have gone wrong for Homer, he vows to give his badge to the next person he sees. When that ends up being Wiggum, he gets his old job back and resumes his position as head of Springfield’s law enforcement.
