Untitled Goose Game review for Nintendo Switch 2
For many years we have played games where you are the hero that saves the day. What’s not to love about beating Bowser and saving Princess Peach, stopping Sephiroth from destroying the planet or defeating Liquid Snake in a fistfight and putting an end Metal Gear Rex before it fires nukes?! Yes, these are all fun games with lush stories of heroism, but what if that is not what you want in a video game? What if you desire to be the bad guy? We are rarely treated to such a game, but there is often a point where your character redeems themselves and becomes more a neutral character. I wanted a game where you are the villain through and through, and Untitled Goose Game definitely steps in to satiate that thirst for villainy.

What started as a small joke among the development team with a stock photo of goose was soon realized as a concept idea for a game that wears its Hitman influence on its sleeve. Well, I say that but if you think you are going to storm in with ideas of how to kill people in the most creative way possible, I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news for you! Untitled Goose Game may look to Hitman as a point of reference, but this dastardly devilish Goose has more nefarious plans for the small English town that he is terrorizing.

In the little English town, the townspeople are going about their day as they normally would. The local farmer is tending to his crops while listening to the young children play gleefully as anyone while not behind the confines of schoolhouse walls. Unfortunately for them, the local menace has woken from his slumber with means of being as annoying as possible. As the Goose, your sole focus is to waddle and honk around the town and displace their belongings.

Each section of the town presents you with a list of different objectives to complete before you can access the next area. There are times when a string of actions are needed to complete one of the objectives. For example, in the second section, there is a young lad that is particularly terrified of the Goose and will run away from him if you run towards him while honking. Like a herding dog, you can lead the boy where you need him to go (there are several times where you need to lead this specific child) and if you play your cards right, you can herd him to a telephone booth. Upon realizing he is stuck the boy will use the phone to call the electronics store owner to try and save him. This means he has to leave his shop, that you had no access to before, and you can slip inside and hit a button that turns on a camera that televises the goose to all the TVs.

Of course, don’t think for a second that the villagers will just let you stroll in and do what you want. Like Hitman, you must utilize stealth and other forms of misdirection to lead villagers to and fro so that you can accomplish your goals. You can honk and chase people, but Untitled Goose Game was cleverly constructed so that kids of all ages (even up to kids in their 30’s) can enjoy the game.

Untitled Goose Game is proof that you don’t always need a highly complex story with pristine graphics to be a great game. The short but extremely interactive world kept me gripping my Nintendo Switch and reluctant to accept that the game was over after just a few hours. I think like most people, I will keep an eye on developers’ House House for whatever wacky and zany game they come up with next.
