Red Bow Review (PS4) 5

Red Bow tells the story of a young girl named Roh; who is unfortunately trapped in a strange dark nightmare world filled with creepy monsters. She will need to solve puzzles and find hidden secrets in order to save herself from this horror filed nightmare. But beware, your actions have consequences! Depending on which item you find, you’ll lead Roh to a different ending.

Red Bow is a top-down adventure game where players have to navigate various areas of the “nightmare” world in order to find answers and a way out; it can almost be viewed as a top-down take on Silent Hill; just less scary.

Red Bow Review (PS4)

The game is divided into chapters which are distinct nightmares that Roh has to get through and find a way to go back home. Each chapter requires players to solve puzzles and find helpful items in order to successfully escape. Now, depending on the items you find and use and your actions, the ending will vary. Thankfully, key items will often shine on screen in order to give you a hint as to what to pick up. Keep in mind, not everything will be used.

Each nightmare is vastly different from one another and features different settings; the first level has a Silent Hill-esque inspiration which made me crave more of it. Levels can be completed quickly if you opt to run for the ending or can take a bit longer if you opt to explore everything.

Red Bow Review (PS4) 1

Interestingly enough, unlike recent games from Ratalaika, Red Bow includes trophies that require multiple playthroughs. While you can get a handful of them during your initial run, the game features multiple endings depending on how you behaved (did you talk to them or not?) with various NPCs across the game’s nightmares. The NPCs are odd and twisted; often challenging you to determine who’s right or wrong in certain situations.

Red Bow’s presentation is sort counter-intuitive. The visuals look great in all their 16bit pixelated glory; some areas more colorful than others as it is a “light” horror game. Obviously, with 16bit visuals, don’t expect full-on gore. One of the game’s moments that you can tell was meant to be scary goes pretty much unnoticed. However, I say counter-intuitive because the soundtrack is anything but scary. Roh is supposedly stuck in various types of nightmares, yet most of the score is cute and nigh jovial. Nothing scary about that.

Red Bow Review (PS4) 2

Red Bow is definitely and interesting and fun game to play. Despite it being short like most Ratalaika Games, this one surprisingly offers a bit more depth thanks to character interactions and multiple endings. This is definitely my favorite offering from Ratalaika Games and I highly recommend it.
