“Caligula: The Ultimate Cut | TAKE ONE Watch Online” If the internet is to be believed, men are always thinking about the Roman Empire. This certainly seems true in cinema. In the second half of 2024, Francis Ford Coppola’s MEGALOPOLIS and Ridley Scott’s GLADIATOR II both turned their lenses towards (New) Rome, making points about…
“We Live In Time | TAKE ONE Watch Online” John Crowley’s British weepie sees the director reunite with BOY A star Andrew Garfield for a non-linear journey through the ups and downs of love, where an ambitious chef and a helplessly optimistic divorcee navigate their relationship across childbirth and a reoccurring cancer diagnosis. While the…
“Grand Theft Hamlet | TAKE ONE Watch Online” The COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns were strange times for all. Some turned to sourdough, and others turned to attempting a production of Shakespeare’s longest and most famous tragedy in an online multiplayer video game. GRAND THEFT HAMLET is a documentary about Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen’s attempts to…
“On Becoming a Guinea Fowl | TAKE ONE Watch Online” ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL – Rungano Nyoni’s second feature film – is a skilfully constructed balance of tone and expectations. The film finds reason in oddities, truths in ambiguities, and joy despite trauma, all underscored by a superb performance from Susan Chardy. The film…
“Rumours | TAKE ONE | Reviews Watch Online” RUMOURS is a crude and broad satire which openly mocks the notion of trying to read deeper meaning into its bizarre portrait of feeble world leaders. Guy Maddin’s latest film follows a G7 summit which lurches between banal political inaction and a nonsensical apocalypse. Nevertheless, despite a…
“Bird | TAKE ONE | Reviews Watch Online” Andrea Arnold’s latest film, BIRD, is a beguiling blend of British social realism and magical realism, exposing the deep yearning towards nature in a dying England left adrift at the end of the world. Incredible performances from Barry Keoghan and Nykika Adams keep the film grounded while…
“Emilia Pérez | TAKE ONE Watch Online” The movie musical’s continued cycle of resurgence has a new entry with Jacques Audiard’s bombastic, audacious melodrama about a cartel kingpin (Karla Sofía Gascón) who leaves her criminal life, her wife Jessi (Selena Gomez), and her children behind to live her authentic life as a woman. She cuts…
“The Assessment | TAKE ONE Watch Online” A striking production design and a concept with a timeless relatability give THE ASSESSMENT a strong foundation. Unfortunately, various thematic strands never cohere into a satisfying harmony. But even if THE ASSESSMENT isn’t greater than the sum of its parts, engaging performances from the lead cast make Fleur…
“Santosh | TAKE ONE | BFI London 2024 Watch Online” SANTOSH is a gripping film that examines the effects of patriarchy, personal grief, and India’s patriarchal and class-focused society with nuance. It is also a gripping drama with excellent character development. When Santosh Saini (Shahana Goswami) finds herself windowed after the death of her husband,…
“Hostile Dimensions | TAKE ONE Watch Online” After a graffiti artist disappears, budding documentary makers Sam and Ash traverse different worlds to track her down. Seasoned found-footage director Graham Hughes puts in the effort with a meagre budget, but a bit of inspired cinematography isn’t enough to detract from unconvincing acting and wooden dialogue. HOSTILE…
