“Conclave | TAKE ONE | BFI London 2024 Watch Online” The intricacy and intrigue of the Catholic Church as an institution and its history and artwork make it an appealing subject for cinema, even for the irreligious and those of other faiths. CONCLAVE mines that intrigue and marries it with both a captivating ensemble cast…
“Since Yesterday | TAKE ONE Watch Online” The appeal of music documentaries is largely the joy of music: even if artists or groups profiled are not known to the viewer, it is hard not to be swept away in the joy of making music and the infectious passion uniting bandmates with each other and their…
“Megalopolis | TAKE ONE | Reviews Watch Online” In an era of cinema characterised by the erosion of the “mid-budget” feature, it’s unusual to find filmmaking at a grand scale taking significant risks. For better or worse, feature films with budgets in excess of $100M tend to be inherently conservative on multiple levels. MEGALOPOLIS is…
“Joker: Folie À Deux | TAKE ONE | Watch Online” Although a pale imitation of the superior cinema of Scorsese and Lumet to which it was indebted, 2019’s JOKER was undoubtedly a cultural phenomenon. It was the first film with an MPAA ‘R’ rating to make over a billion dollars at the global box office,…
“Sujo | TAKE ONE | London Film Festival 2024 Watch Online” Reconciling your past with your present and desired future is an existentially confusing thing to ruminate upon. Layering in the deeds – or misdeeds – of your father and the influence of significant figures in your life can only make the feelings more complicated,…
“Stranger Eyes | TAKE ONE Watch Online” Do you ever sit – at the park, in a cafe, or on the bus – and just watch? Humanity passes you by, their own little worlds unchanged by your gaze: a man with a pushchair, a runner with headphones, a tradesperson. You imagine what their life perhaps…
“The Substance | TAKE ONE Watch Online” Coralie Fargeat’s THE SUBSTANCE is a delirium-inducing concoction of numerous body horror films and literary influences, further combining an askew glance at fame and a gaudy gore aesthetic to an eye-catching effect. A resurgent performance from Demi Moore and an accomplished one from Margaret Qualley give the film…
“The Critic | TAKE ONE | Watch Online” Taking swipes at a film called THE CRITIC, about a theatre writer taking down the stage’s brightest stars with his cruel pen, feels like the lowest hanging fruit. Unfortunately, Anand Tucker’s film is a mean-spirited, uninspired look at London’s vibrant 1930s arts scene and the era’s correspondingly…
“Starve Acre | TAKE ONE Watch Online” STARVE ACRE combines several talents to a deeply unsettling effect. Daniel Kokotajlo’s second feature (based on an Andrew Michael Hurley novel) evokes folk horror released around the film’s 1970s setting, and whilst it doesn’t necessarily plough new ground in tone or theme, some of the vivid imagery makes…
“Woken | TAKE ONE | Reviews Watch Online” Premiering at the Glasgow Film Festival 2024, WOKEN is a sci-fi thriller that packs a punch disproportionate to its small scale and short length. Despite some unfortunately clumsy tropes deployed in the third act, WOKEN still has enough twists and turns and enough contemporary relevance to be…
