“The Blue Caftan | TAKE ONE | Watch Online” In 2019, the Moroccan government prosecuted 122 people for same-sex sexual activity. It remains illegal to this day as per the 1962 penal code, which prohibits “lewd or unnatural acts” between individuals of the same sex. In Maryam Touzani’s THE BLUE CAFTAN, a delicate and sophisticated…
“The Astronaut | TAKE ONE Watch Online” Nicolas Giraud directs and stars in THE ASTRONAUT (L’ASTRONAUTE), a gentle and beautifully shot film with some ambitious ideas around opening up space exploration and connecting with people on Earth. Although slow, the drama of the climax makes the journey worthwhile. Jim Desforges (Nicolas Giraud) is an aeronautical…
“The Ordinaries | TAKE ONE Watch Online” Sophie Linnebaum’s feature film debut, THE ORDINARIES, depicts a fantasy world where cinematic tropes take physical form and where Main Characters rule over oppressed Supporting Characters and Outtakes. With some considered production design evocative of BRAZIL’s dystopia, Linnenbaum crafts a story that very nearly collapses under its own…
“The Artist and The Wall of Death Watch Online” THE ARTIST AND THE WALL OF DEATH is an Irish-Scottish co-production that follows Glasgow-based visual artist Stephen Skrynka in his obsessive quest to build a Wall of Death. The documentary centres on failure in an interesting way, but the perfunctory treatment of that failure and the…
“Typist Artist Pirate King | TAKE ONE Watch Online” Carol Morley’s TYPIST ARTIST PIRATE KING is a psychogeographic tour across England through the prism of an unappreciated artist suffering with mental illness. It’s a strange road trip movie with the same odd register as Morley’s previous films and a showcase for two very different performances….
“Skin Deep | TAKE ONE Watch Online” Within the sub-genre of body-swap films, more often than not, the ‘swaps’ (themselves usually occurring after some mythical hoopla, the fundamentals of their existence exposited to audiences cheaply) are often used to illustrate the same idea: the phrase “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes”. The term indicates…
“Mister Organ | TAKE ONE Watch Online” Documentarian David Farrier is no stranger to the weird; seven years ago, his documentary TICKLED explored a strange spiralling of events and hidden identities from one innocuous enquiry into ‘competitive tickling’. He returns with a new feature, MISTER ORGAN, which begins in similarly mundane circumstances. When a high-end…
“Tropic | TAKE ONE | Reviews Watch Online” TROPIC (TROPIQUE) is a film that mixes genres to talk about humanity and what it means to accept or abandon what cannot be changed. Although some structural issues weigh it down, the film’s allusions to sci-fi horror elevate this story, mainly told through unspoken expressions and gestures….
“Other People’s Children | TAKE ONE | Watch Online” With OTHER PEOPLE’S CHILDREN (LES ENFANTS DES AUTRES), Rebecca Zlotowski crafts a wonderfully mature romantic comedy-drama that tackles adult themes with grace and boldly positions itself in the canon of modern romance films. Rachel (Virginie Efira) is a woman in her forties who fills her life…
“Sanctuary | TAKE ONE | Reviews Watch Online” BDSM power relations dominate the screen in Zachary Wigon’s SANCTUARY, a taut sexy chamber piece showcasing an incredible performance from Margaret Qualley. It’s a well-considered film that draws the audience into the tangled and shifting power dynamics of sub-dom kink and keeps the audience guessing until its…
