„Guardians of the Galaxy #1 Review: The Next Marvel Epic Starts Here“

Just 364 days from the team’s previous relaunch, a new Guardians of the Galaxy #1 arrives this week under the helm of writer Al Ewing and the art duo of Juan Cabal and Federico Blee. With a killer creative team featuring perhaps the best writer in superhero comics, Cabal’s trippy linework with unique, detailed paneling, and Blee’s technicolor sprawling universe, the first issue is a stellar beginning for Ewing’s story to come. Whether readers are old-school cosmic experts, or simply fans of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, this first issue appeals to comic fans of every background.

Since the 2006 crossover event „Annihilation,“ the galaxy’s heroes have found themselves in a nonstop series of escalating battles. The Guardians, still reeling from Infinity Wars and Rocket Raccoon’s near-death experience at the end of 2019’s Guardians of the Galaxy run, are understandably worn out. So when Nova a.k.a. Richard Rider descends upon the crew’s laid-back barbecue asking for their help, Gamora speaks for them all: „We’re not a team. We’re a family. Let us have that,“ she says, completely drained of energy or excitement. But the comic itself is anything but.

Guardians mainstays Star-Lord and Rocket aren’t having any of that, nor are Moondragon and Phyla-Vell, two additions to the roster during Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw’s run. This team-up with Nova has Ewing leading to the newest cosmic threat: the returned Gods of New Olympus.

Greek gods including Zeus, Artemis and more are reinterpreted here, giving them an electric twist that’s more tailored for a frantic, fast-paced modern comic than the grandiose aspects of Greek mythology. There are only so many times creators can go back to the same villains for galactic adventures. Marvel even did a one-month „Annihilation“ sequel mini event this past December. But just as he did with his instant-classic Immortal Hulk series, Ewing is attempting something fresh, which is exactly what an audience is looking for in a relaunched book.

Ewing’s introduction of these gods of Olympus is where both Cabal and Blee shine the brightest, quite literally, as the lightning bolts of Zeus light up the void of space in his confrontation with Nova and Phyla-Vell. The reality-jumping floating city of New Olympus feels more akin to something out of a Steve Ditko fever dream than a nod back to the gods of the ancient Greeks, leaving readers in a whirlwind of color (imagine a Jimi Hendrix guitar solo adapted into comic form, and you’re on the right track).

A roster that includes Phyla-Vell, Nova, Moondragon and the Grant Morrison creation Marvel Boy may leave fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Guardians squad slightly disappointed, but the comic version of these space misfits has always had a cast of characters that come and go. Even so, the lovable Groot is never apart from Rocket for long, and it would be foolish to think Gamora won’t be chasing after Peter Quill when she sees that he’s aiding Nova in stopping New Olympus‘ planet-destroying brigade.

The cliffhanger ending will have readers eagerly awaiting Guardians of the Galaxy #2, promising to widen the scope of the series beyond the cosmic corner fans might expect. A great debut leaves its audience with more questions than answers. With the Guardians gaining members and missing fan favorites, the reveals of New Olympus and the status of the Nova Corps up in the air, Ewing has sprinkled no shortage of breadcrumbs throughout Guardians of the Galaxy #1, leaving next month’s followup a must-read issue.
