Star Trek: Discovery Reportedly Renewed For Season 4 At CBS All Access

Star Trek: Discovery has reportedly been renewed for season 4 by CBS All Access. After a 12 year absence from the small screen, the Star Trek universe made its return to the television format – via streaming – in 2017 with season 1 of Discovery. Set before the events of Star Trek: TOS, Discovery introduced a brand new starship and a new crew, immediately plunging both into the middle of a brutal war with the Klingon Empire.

The war-centered plot of season 1 may indeed have made for an action packed series, but many hardcore Trekkies actually objected to the show’s emphasis on action over character. After establishing its new characters and tone in season 1, Discovery in season 2 tried to service older fans by bringing in more familiar elements from Star Trek lore, including the Starship Enterprise, Christopher Pike and – most importantly – Spock. CBS All Access was clearly happy with how things played out in season 2, as Discovery continued its efforts to satisfy old school Trek fans while bringing in new devotees, and the streamer went ahead with season 3. The twist for the upcoming third season sees series lead Michael Burnham traveling 930 years into the future, and indeed a teaser was released at this year’s New York Comic Con showing what the 32nd Century will look like.

With Star Trek: Discovery season 3 yet to arrive (no official premiere date has been revealed thus far), CBS All Access reportedly has already renewed the show for season 4. The unconfirmed news comes via Production Weekly which currently lists season 4 as “under development” according to Spoiler TV (h/t CBR).

That CBS All Access would be going ahead with season 4 of Discovery before season 3 arrives should really come as no surprise, given the huge commitment the streamer has made to producing Star Trek content. The biggest new Trek property coming up is of course Star Trek: Picard, which brings back Patrick Stewart as the famous starship captain from Star Trek: TNG. In addition to Picard, All Access is also producing the animated comedy series Lower Decks, about life on a nondescript Starfleet ship, as well as a Discovery spinoff show built around the mysterious Section 31 with Michelle Yeoh in the lead. And of course there’s also Short Treks, a series of one-off shorts tied in with the Discovery universe.

On the big screen side, it was also recently revealed that Paramount has not one but two Star Trek movies in development, though it seems neither of them is Quentin Tarantino’s proposed Trek film. Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley was also recently hired to develop a Trek-related project, which everyone assumes is a movie (Simon Pegg recently indicated that Hawley may not be working on Star Trek 4, so no one is quite sure what Hawley is up to regarding Trek).

All this Star Trek content indeed represents a smorgasbord for fans of the venerable sci-fi franchise, though Star Trek: Discovery remains the flagship for the series on streaming. It will be interesting to see where the show goes in season 4 after leaping ahead to the 32nd Century in season 3.
