Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts review for PlayStation

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 1

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 7
Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts doesn’t have a story per se. Set in the unforgiving Siberian wilderness, the game puts players in the shoes of Seeker, a paid contractor whose job is to assassinate targets hidden across Russia. Seeker’s companion is a smart A.I. device that communicates his objectives and will also give him pointers throughout the various missions.

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts is a first-person shooter that resolves on sniping; as the title implies. You do have additional weapons such as a pistol and AK-47 for example, to accommodate close encounters, but it’s highly recommended that players scout areas to find and mark targets in order to take them out from afar. And seeing its emphasis on sniping, your sniping will be impacted by distance and wind factors.
Thankfully, the game has a dotted line, the Dynamic Reticle System, that will display to help you fire your shots and make sure you hit your target. It takes a while to grasp it, but once it clicks, there’s nothing more satisfying than shooting target halfway across the map.

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 6

The game is split into 5 areas (well 6 if you count the tutorial area) with 5 contracts, i.e. main objectives, each. They usually vary between kill this guy, that guy, obtain data, etc… So to progress to the next area, all of these objectives have to be met. If not, you can still go to an extract point and « upload » completed objectives; this acts as a save point. Think of those as typewriters in Resident Evil games. That’s not to say that the game doesn’t auto-saves; it does but it works questionably at best.

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 5

If you haven’t completed all 5 contracts, you’ll be able to go back and pick up where you left off. Once the five main contracts are done, the next area will unlock and you can jump in. Or you can go back to previously completed areas to complete any unfinished business such as finding missed collectibles or completing special objectives dubbed Challenges. Challenges are pretty varied as they range from killing the main target within X minutes; killing a target with raising the alarm, interrogating X amount of soldiers, performing double kills; and so on. It brings an additional layer of challenge to an already intense game.

Each level has a variety of approaches. You can try to go head-on directly, which isn’t recommended or explore your surroundings to find an underground passage for example. Although, while overall the level design is well thought out, some missions will drop you off a few meters away from enemies, basically surrounded, making hiding and scouting the area harder than it should.

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 3

As you successfully complete contracts and challenges, players will be rewarded with in-game money in order to buy additional weapons and improve their gear. The game has a decent and simple skill tree for gear improvement allowing a bit of support to players.

There’s also a fun bullet cam which basically follows your bullet if you hit the perfect shot. While interesting at first, it gets annoying real quick; it basically also acts as a kill confirmation type of thing but at least, it can be turned off. If you hit a perfect headshot, you’ll also see bits of the heads flying off but it’s nothing compared to Sniper Elite’s visceral Kill cam. Seeing enemies be thrown around like ragdoll is actually funny, but it overstays its welcome.

The game also has three difficulty settings varying from easy to difficult. Thankfully, once you begin, you are not locked into the difficulty you chose. Every time to dive into a mission, you’ll be prompted to select the difficulty of your choice based on your virtual sniping skills. While the addition of an easy mode is welcome, unfortunately, it’s not that easy. Contrary to its description, enemies can still spot you and even if you manage to get away and hide, they still have an idea of your location making things unnecessarily difficult for newcomers.

Another aspect of the game which is sure to raise more frustration than fun is the questionable auto-save. As mentioned above, the game does auto-save at times, but it’s inconsistent. Attempting and failing an objective twice, for example, will respawn you at different spots. Also, the game doesn’t save automatically after successfully completing an objective, so you have to manage to reach an extraction point if you want the game to see your objective as complete. There’s nothing more frustrating playing for 30-45 minutes to reach a specific point on the map, completing an objective and dying on your way out and losing progress.

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 4

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts actually looks great. I’ll be honest in saying that I was surprised considering this is a budget title. While it’s not RDR2 level of pretty, the game’s visuals are pretty solid and the ragdoll physics of enemies dying is pretty hilarious. The environments are detailed and well designed. However, not all is perfect. The game suffers from brief freezing and stuttering; it doesn’t even have to have a lot of action going on. Sometimes coming back from the kill cam or reloading your weapon after a close up kill will slow the game down. It’s doesn’t deter from the experience, but it can get annoying if you got caught and stuck in the middle of a firefight or trying to spot a sniper. Audio-wise, it’s fairly decent. The banter between Seeker and the A.I. is kept to a minimum and strictly business-wise; not much in the way of jokes or friendly banter. The score is well done. Sniper Ghost Warrior 3’s Mikolai Stroinski is back in creating a very Russian inspired soundtrack with lower and darker tones; some tracks could be perfect for a suspense-focused horror movie.

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts is a must for FPS fans. Sure it’s not as fast-paced as your typical COD game, but that’s what makes it great. Despite its technical hiccups and pretty thin story, Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts is one of this year’s most fun and challenging shooter.
