#Why PUBG Still Costs Money To Play -BB

During an in-depth interview with PUBG’s creative director of the Karakin map update, Dave Curd, he gave Screen Rant an answer to why PUBG still costs money in what’s otherwise a free-to-play genre. There are other titles that have entered the battle royale scene since PUBG released in 2017 – the largest being Fortnite and Apex Legends which are free-to-play. PUBG maintains its price of $30.00.

The free-to-play format allows gamers to access the games with no charge other than for cosmetic features that they decide to purchase. Most of the games in the genre have instead introduced the concept of battle passes that players must pay to access. These passes reward players with new items as they level up and complete challenges. Even though players must still purchase PUBG, the game has also introduced the battle pass feature with the Survivor Pass (even Rainbow Six Siege introduced a battle pass, another premium shooter).

During our interview with Dave Curd we asked him how the company convinces players to pay for PUBG when they could play a competitor’s game for free (and why concurrent player counts on the PC version are declining consistently). He first stated that our question was actually two questions. In his opinion the first question was „Why are we pay-to-play?“ He then proceeded to laugh the question off by saying that we should get in contact with an executive because „that is way above my pay grade.

The second question in Curd’s opinion was „is it worth your thirty hard-earned dollars?“ He believes that with the amount of play and happiness that players get out of PUBG makes it more than worth that thirty dollar price tag, even three years post-launch. He says that when fans ask him to improve the game and he sees that they’ve played thousands of hours, it more than shows that the game is worth it because, „I don’t know many other places in gaming where you get your 3000 hours for X dollars.“ Ultimately though, Curd doesn’t really care what other titles in the genre do. According to him what actually matters is that he keeps helping make PUBGthe most fun, most innovative, most interesting, the most unique game BR that you can play.

Most battle royale games are free-to-play to ensure that players begin playing the game in the first place. PUBG on the other hand managed to become one of the best selling and most played video games despite having a price tag. Some might be worried that the game is running out of steam since the creator began working on other projects. Dave Curd might be right though in that if players are willing to play for 3000 hours then it might just be worth the price of admission.

PUBG Season 6 adds the new island, Karakin, and is available on PC now, and consoles beginning January 30, 2020.
