„10 Scary Movies Horror Fans Need To See In 2020 (& When They’re Releasing)“

The horror genre is a popular one, and with a new year comes new films to see. A sidequel, a film inspired by an old TV show, multiple sequels, the continuation of long-running franchises… Audiences can expect all of this and more in 2020.

While there are several exciting flicks releasing in the coming months, this list contains 10 that true fans of the genre have to see. Many are part of successful stories that have been told for years and years and there are also some new and fresh plots to prepare for, as well.

10 The Grudge: January 3, 2020

On January 3, 2020, The Grudge came out in theaters. This was going to be a reboot of The Grudge from 2004, but it turned out to be a sidequel instead.

As the fourth installment of this film series, this new horror flick is written and directed by Nicolas Pesce, produced by Sam Raimi, Taka Ichise and Rob Tapert and starring Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, Betty Gilpin, John Cho, Jacki Weaver and Lin Shaye. The plot is centered around a police officer, murders and an interesting house. 

9 Fantasy Island: February 14, 2020

Fantasy Island, which is a film based on a series of the same name that was on from 1977 to 1984, will release on February 14, 2020. This work is directed by Jeff Wadlow, and he wrote it with Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach, while Jason Blum produced it through Blumhouse Productions. The stars include Michael Peña, Lucy Hale and Maggie Q.

The premise of this upcoming movie is that a man named Mr. Roarke invites people to a luxurious island, in order to make their wildest dreams come true. However, these dreams turn out to be nightmares.

8 Brahms: The Boy II: February 21, 2020

In 2016, The Boy, starring Lauren Cohan and Rupert Evans, hit theaters, and soon, a sequel will. Titled Brahms: The Boy II, it is directed by William Brent Bell, written by Stacey Menear, and is being put out by STX Entertainment.

The stars in it include Katie Holmes and Ralph Ineson, and the plot focuses on a family who moves into a mansion, without knowing its creepy history. This sequel releases on February 21, 2020.

7 A Quiet Place: Part II: March 20, 2020

After the success of A Quiet Place in 2018, a sequel, A Quiet Place: Part II will be released by Paramount Pictures on March 20, 2020.

This work is written and directed by John Krasinski (who was in the first film), and it stars Emily Blunt, who is now leading the Abbott family on her own. In this continuation, the group figures out that there are more dangers in the world, besides just the creatures that were featured in the first movie. 

6 Saw 8 (Title Unconfirmed): May 15, 2020

So far, there have been eight Saw movies, and a ninth one will come out on May 15, 2020. This one is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman. The screenplay is by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger and the story is actually from Chris Rock, who will star alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Marisol Nichols and Max Minghella.

News came out that a working title of this flick was The Organ Donor, but the latest rumors point to a different name: Spiral: From the Book of Saw. Who knows what kind of thrills and game-like traps this will bring about for audiences…

5 Fear Street: June 5, 2020

This year will also give fans Fear Street, which is directed by Leigh Janiak and is based on an R. L. Stine series. There will be three movies set in various time periods and put out one month after one another, Fear Street is the first and is currently slated for a June release. 

This first installment will take place in 1994, and it will focus on teens dealing with the scary things that are happening in their town. Kiana Madeira and Olivia Welch will play characters in a gay relationship, and one of them will be from the 1990s, while one of them is from the 1600s. Gillian Jacobs and Benjamin Flores Jr., a.k.a. Lil‘ P-Nut, will also star.‘

4 Candyman: June 12, 2020

This year will also bring about Candyman, a direct sequel to the film of the same name from 1992. It features Tony Todd as Daniel Robitaille / Candyman and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Anthony McCoy. It is directed by Nia DaCosta. And it is written by Win Roselfeld and Jordan Peele, who previously saw success in the genre with Get Out and Us

The story will be set where the Cabrini-Green housing project was in the original, and it will release on June 12, 2020.

3 The Purge 5 (Title Unconfirmed): July 10, 2020

The Purge movies focus on a holiday that takes place each year and that allows everyone to commit crimes for 12 hours. The first installment in this series came out in 2013, and on July 10, 2020, the franchise may be ending, with a final installment.

This fifth film is directed by Everardo Gout and will be released by Universal Pictures. Rumors have stated that a heist may be the focus, as well, and according to IMDb, stars such as Ana de la Reguera and Leven Rambin will be featured. 

2 The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It: September 11, 2020

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is a sequel to The Conjuring (from 2013) and The Conjuring 2 (from 2016), as well as the eighth film in the Conjuring Universe franchise.

This movie is directed by Michael Chaves, the screenplay is by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, and the story is from Johnson-McGoldrick and James Wan. The stars of it all, Ed and Lorraine Warren, will, once again, be played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, though the plot will not focus on them in a haunted house. Fans will be able to discover all the excitement on the release day, September 11, 2020.

1 Halloween Kills: October 15, 2020

Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle will return as Laurie Strode and Michael Myers in Halloween Kills, a sequel to Halloween (from 2018) and the twelfth overall flick in this classic franchise.

Stars from past installments, such as Kyle Richards, Dylan Arnold, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Nancy Stephens and Charles Cyphers, will also be featured, alongside Anthony Michael Hall and Robert Longstreet. This slasher fill is directed by David Gordon Green, it is written by Green, Scott Teems and Danny McBride, and it will come out on October 16, 2020, followed by Halloween Ends on October 15, 2021.
